Advice before editing this pre-1700 Colby profile?

Question

I have information to contribute to the profile of Unknown Colby. This is what I can add: First name, birth & death dates.

• John Colby, 1509-1548. From FamilySearchTree. 

These are the sources I am using: found on my FamilySearchTree  

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

For pre-1700 profiles, family tree info is not sufficient. It might point to actual records which would be great. What Jim says is good advice.

Eric, I do not believe you can make the changes you made (which you made before asking your G2G question). The last - only - name on the profile was Colby, first name could be any name - John, George, Phillip, whatever. The profile Colby had a location of Lincolnshire. You changed the location to Suffolk, with no evidence. What do you have that proves that no name Colby from Lincolnshire was your John Colby from Suffolk? Did you communicate with the Profile Manager of Colby-30? He may know that his Colby was indeed from Lincolnshire, or have other information he just hasn't entered.

You should have created a new profile for your John. If you have any questions, we'd like to help - just ask your question before you make changes.

    Yes, I found the info on ancestry.com. Sorry if I messed something up. It read over on the right hand side that it was open to enter info.  I sent you a message earlier and told you I am new to the part of entering older info. I will not do it again.  I’ll not place anything else on the tree if I’m not sure about it. I’ll check first. I have tried to place on the tree only info I was certain. I believe I have put all the family info I had on the tree anyway

Found some info for the profile and parents of above mentioned Colby-30 John Colby wife's name, children and son of John is a John, Will is mentioned, two source books

added into the comments on profile page so that maybe someone with pre-1500 cert can finish profile.

Jim, thank you for pointing these issues out. I have a Colby ancestor, his father was Jacob b abt 1799. I’ve an ancestry dna match who insists Jacob is a left over hessian mercenary. Given the number of Jacob Colbys b 1795-1805, I refuse to agree that easily. Another ancestor is so messed up on Ancestry, he has 4 simultaneous families all because ppl didn’t cross check their info. It takes work and documentation to verify some ancestors.A name, approximate location & DOB isn’t enough.
