Category: South African Republic, World War I - Delete Request

The category South African Republic, World War I is a misnomer and should read simply South African, World War I which is already in existence.  At the time of the Great War South Africa was referred to as the Union.  SA Roots have agreed to use just South Africa.

Unless there is objection, I shall delete the Category, and I seek you opinion.

Why not just South Africa, World War I or is it proper to say United States of American, World War I

Sorry Louis, (typo) finger problem, but thanks for pointing it out.  South Africa, World War I is correctly set up.

You might want to wait for M&W input?

Is this why there is a South Africa and Southern Africa category?

Richard... can you give a link to the Southern Africa category you refer to.
Hi Andrew

Refer to the edit
Thank you Richard.   The Southern Africa category is a perfectly acceptable regional category (although superflous in my opinion).  The problem with this specific is that it is a high level category, clearly stated yet contains profiles.  This category should simply carry sub-categories which are the countries which make up the Southern African Region.

I would seek other opinion on the deletion of the South African Republic Military History  It should, if anything, be Republic of South Africa, Military History BUT the South African Projects have chosed to simplify this to South Africa to prevent confusion between the Union and Republic, if I am not mistaken.  However, I understand there was a Zuid-Afrikaansche Republic, but even if this was remotely valid we might better categorize this as Transvaal pre 1910 Military History (sorry a distraction). Perhaps Ronel and Louis might like to take a look and advise.

That's fine, I was looking at something else relevant to World War I regarding Somalia (to use a modern name) and noticing the pair of categories I thought to ask (by that I mean my starting comment).

To respond to your second comment, a succession box could be something to look at if South Africa went through multiple names as a means of clearly displaying when each name was in effect. Just a suggestion, if it's causing confusion for others

Regarding South African Republic Military History

All profiles pre 1960 will not fall under this Cat. as we only became known as the Republic of South Africa on the 31 May 1960

Before -  Since the 31 of May 1910 our country was known as the Union of South Africa

Zuid-Afrikaansche Republic was only used for the Transvaal pre Anglo Boer War. 1852-1902

After 1902

1902- 31 May 1910 it was known as Transvaal Colony

I presume the creation thereof was for the profiles that participated in the Border War "Grensoorlog" after 1960

South African Border War - Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org › wiki › South_African_Border_War

The South African Border War, also known as the Namibian War of Independence, and sometimes denoted in South Africa as the Angolan Bush War, was a largely asymmetric conflict that occurred in Namibia (then South West Africa), Zambia, and Angola from 26 August 1966 to 21 March 1990.

Ronel, Thanks for your comprehensive answer...  Clearly the South African Republic Military History is a misnomer and should be deleted, which I shall proceed to do.  Thank you for your input.
