If it is the EDWARDS family living at 20 Conway Street, Broughton in 1881, Class: RG11; Piece: 3954; Folio: 56; Page: 21, she was listed as "Mary Agnes Edwards".

GRO has her birth registration :

GRO Reference: 1879  M Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 66

There is a marriage for her parents on FreeBMD:

Joseph EDWARDS & Agnes THOMPSON; Jun Qtr 1873, Salford, 8b 200. http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ has them marrying at Liverpool, Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne. The marriage image is available on Ancestry:

16 Jun 1873 at Liverpool St. Nicholas. Joseph Edwards, full age, Bachelor, Barman, of Brownlow Hill, son of Thomas Edwards, Farmer & Agnes Thompson, full age, Spinster, of St. George's Square, daughter of Peter Thompson, Mariner. Both signed. Witnesses were Frank Johnson & Ellen Forsman (?).

I am very grateful to each of you who replied to my question.  Unfortunately none of these answer the query.  I hold the original Certificate of marriage to James Barnes Simpson, 25, Farrier of Carlisle Cumberland this showed they wed in Salford 1899.   Agnes was shown as 20 and her father was William Edwards, engineer.
