John west-18568 wife died,  he then married meditation Legge-685. she had been married twice before. Her second husband was Richard west-18574, this is where I have a conundrum. The more I look, the more I am convinced that  Richard west-18574, is Richard west-18560 John's father.

Meaning John west-18568 married his father's second wife.

According to the marriage record on Meditation's profile, the Richard West that she married was the son of Richard West. This seems to make it more likely that he is the one baptised on 31 March 1805 in St Laurence in Thanet, Kent (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQ7R-CQJ), not the Richard who was John's father, who according to his profile was the son of Edward and was baptised on 25 September 1803 in St Laurence in Thanet, Kent.

Sometimes we can not see the wood for the trees, the answer was there in front of me all the time, so thank you for opening my eyes. I am now passed the road block.

There is also his brother Richard. Given the names are so common it is possible there are also other families of the same names in the same area. Maybe cousins or more distant relatives. I have that problem with my George and Poole ancestors.

The 1851 census shown on familysearch is not as complete as the same census shown on Ancestry.com.  The one on Ancestry.com shows Richard West age 79 living with Thomas and Mercy.  It states that Richard is the widowed father. Your profile on Thomas shows that Edward is the father.  Perhaps that is an issue.  I will try to send it to you.

Yes Martyn, perhaps the census-taker made a mistake.  It happens a lot.  Happy hunting!
