I love this photograph of my mother Opal, shown here in late 1945 in Sarepta, Mississippi, with her then-beau James "Wilbert" Grist. My mother had graduated from Sarepta High School (HS) in June, 1945 (at age 15) and because she was a model student, not to mention president of the Senior Class and the Student Body, she was recruited to become a teacher by the School beginning with the 1945/46 academic year. Opal spent the summer of 1945 in Sentatobia, MS at the Senatobia Junior College (since renamed the Northwest Mississippi Community College) where she earned a teaching certificate which allowed her to teach in Sarepta. Clearly, during the term a romance developed with Wilbert and the two had this photo taken when the annual school portraits were taken. What's surprising is that Wilbert was Opal's student at the time! My how things change... I hope you enjoy the photo - which by the way is the first one I have of my mother in which she looks like an adult. Best regards,
