Hi I'm trying to locate the parents of Rebecca Gassaway c.1755-1817 wife of Lawrence Stull.

My Dad has 34 different matches to Nicholas Gassaway [Gassaway-128] on ancestry's thru lines. The problem is Nicholas Gassaway (1697-1757) had 3 wives, 14 children, listing them ALL in his will, none were named Rebecca.

Since DNA strongly suggests he is her ancestor, and I can't seem to find the data to prove, or disprove this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Rebecca m. Lawrence Stull 12 May 1778 Frederick Co, MD. Witness to the wedding was Robert Gassaway [gassaway-54] son of Nicholas Gassaway.

Nicholas Gassaway (1697-1757) had 6 sons. I have ruled out all but 3 of them as slim potential fathers for her. Anyhow help, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Nate

thanks for the advice on the email.

Yes I have that marriage record...the problem is obtaining, after over 20 years of research, more genealogical data...

I descend from Nicholas Gassaway and Elizabeth Hawkins they were my 7th g-grandparents. Their daughter Elizabeth Gassaway married Charles Sellman. My line ended up in Kentucky.

Nicholas's father, John Gassaway had two brothers in Anne Arundel. Nicholas and Thomas. I have a document somewhere where Nicholas sells or gives land to his Uncle Thomas Gassaway. It is a bit confusing because it seems every male Gassaway named one of their sons Nicholas.

I have not located your Rebecca yet but suspect that she is either the daughter of one of Nicholas and Elizabeth Hawkins sons or she descends from one of Nicholas's uncles.

Have you tried running the name Gassaway in matches on Ancestry? If you haven't yet you may also want to submit DNA to gedmatch and see if you can find matches on there. It picks up matches better and you can compare with others one to one. A lot of the descendants have their gedmatch ID's on WikiTree.

The only reason my DNA information isn't showing on Gassaway-128, Nicholas's profile is because he is my 7th g-grandfather. If you click on his daughter Elizabeth (Gassaway) Sellman it shows. If I find anything I will let you know.

Thanks for the response my friend, I have a GEDmatch account, but not very good with using it.

The autosomal DNA matches that I have with Nicholas Gassaway [gassaway-128] are through Ancestry, their platform called "Thru Lines".

This DNA connection and circumstancial evidence makes me believe that Nicholas Gassaway (128) and one of his 3 wives is my ancestor.

Robert Gassaway, Nicholas Gassaway's son, was in the same military unit, Capt. Vallentine Creager Co, April 1776, as my Lawrence Stull, the future husband of Rebecca Gassaway, although my Lawrence served in the company in October 1776 and presumably went to fight in White Plains.

And as I mentioned above, Robert Gassaway witness the wedding between Lawerence and Rebecca May 1778, 2 years later.

Of note, my Lawrence Stull and Rebecca had 8 kids and moved from Frederick Co, MD to Hopkins Co, KY and then to Posey Co, IL. One son was Nicholas Stull, and another was Gassaway Stull.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Blessings, Nate
I can not use my thrulines because they only go back to 5th generation grandparents. I searched Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA, and MyHeritage and I did do some searches through my matches and gedmatch. They did confirm a connection. Rebecca migrated to Kentucky about the same time my 5th g-grandparents (Nicholas's grandaughter) did based on the timing. I will send you what I know at this point.
I see, perhaps we can try our matches on GEDmatch? PM me and Ill give you my Dad's DNA ID.

Would love to see what you have. I don't think its a coincidence your Gassaway's went to Kentucky from Maryland the same time as my Rebecca and Lawrence Stull. Seriously appreciate your help my friend.

Sent you a message at the same moment you posted this.smiley
