Is there a project that covers these pre-1700 people?

Question

I want to contribute to the deep genealogy on our shared tree. Here are people I can add, along with dates and locations:

• Robert Redhead, Gaoler, keeper of theCastle of York , 1596, England

Here are the sources I am using:

Rick, thanks for that. I'm a novice to genealogy and W-T - where do I go from here? How do I get back to this profile page? Or edit this post? Sorry, but this is the first time.PS: We're not sure Robert is an ancestor, but I'm hoping to build the links through W-T.

You can see there's no entry for Robert. There's a Thomas of about that time, but no connection to Robert. Usually, on WikiTree, we start from a known person and work through to find ancestors. That might not be possible here.  What you have is a clear snapshot in time, but no links to relatives. These will have to be found.

There do seem to have been Redheads (or other variants on that name) in Yorkshire in the 16th century.  Here is a list of results of one search. https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/5e987197f493fd1027ff2d73?locale=en

Some of these may be possibilities for further investigation.

You can start a profile for Robert from "My WikiTree Navigation" and clicking "Add" then choosing New Person.  You'll have to estimate either a birth or death date.  If you find more information, you can edit what you have.

The historical stuff can go in the Biography, with the sources you have already in the Sources section or as inline citations (if you're familiar with those)

I'd suggest taking some time to check out all the options available from the various drop-down menus. From your profile you can search for other profiles in the global tree by name (top center) or search just your watchlist (profiles for which you are manager or are on the Trusted List). You can click on the Ancestors button to view your recent ancestors or select Compact Tree from the drop-down menu for your WikiTree-ID (Redhead-290) to see more generations. You can view a list of your contributions to the tree by clicking the link for "Ralph's <number> contributions". You can also view activity on your own Watchlist profiles via Family Activity Feed from your My WikiTree drop-down menu.

Whenever you get stuck and/or have specific questions, come back here to G2G and post. There are lots of members willing to help.

Thats great Rick, and thanks for the welcome. I get stuck on basic routes through everything, mainly. Practice will help. I will check the options carefully. I know this profile will take time and patience, but may eventually link with an established profile somewhere along the journey. 'Cuthbert' is a name that turns-up regularly in the Corbridge Redheads - I've not profiled them yet, but will. Ralph is common too.

I checked a couple of proven accurate profiles against theirs on FreeReg. They weren't accurate on dates so be open-minded on them re Robert Redhead (Redhead-399) Robert Redhead dates on his profile so far are proven by their sources, although not much to go on yet. He was little more than a family myth, so I'm excited to see where it goes, if anywhere. With your expert help and guidance I'm sure it will do well. I've seen variations of 'Redhead' on the same document for the same person, written one sentence after the other. So don't let the other forms put you off, although there are strong lines of 'Reedhead's' and 'Readheeds', amongst a few others. Great to have an expert on board! All the best. Ralph

Actually, Ralph, I think I've found your man.

This account states that Robert Redhead was granted arms and would thus have been known as Esquire or Armiger.  In the FreeReg results, the Robert Redhead of View 22, buried in 1617 at Howden, is designated Esquire. Other entries at Howden are his children, variously baptized and buried.
