Do you enjoy photographing gravestones? Would you like to see WikiTree reach its goal of documenting the final resting place of as many ancestors across the world as possible and sourcing them on profiles?

500px-Susie_s_Resource_Bucket-13.jpg

We NEED you! Many of our teams around the world are in need of members!

The goal of the Global Cemeteries Project is to create and/or update profiles of our deceased ancestors using original content, and reliable sources.

In order to meet our Goals, project members partake in a variety of tasks, including (but not limited to):

  • photographing tombstones and memorials;
  • transcribing the data contained within these photographs to ancestor profiles;
  • finding and adding reliable sources;
  • grouping of these profiles through the use of relevant cemetery and regional categories; and
  • documenting the history of our cemeteries through the use of free space pages.

If you are interested (and we hope you are!), please
ANSWER THIS POST with your local area(s) of interest.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I would be happy to help transcribe. I am in Dublin, Ireland and live within 2km of Mount Jerome Cemetery where a lot of my family are buried.

Rita
I have family members buried in Pilot Grove Cemetery #1 in Jamesport, Missouri (Daviess County), I also have images of family tombstones.

I also have some images of family headstones in the Rockport Cemetery in Miami County, KS.

How do I add these to the biographies? I followed the Youtube directions, but it didn't work.

My ID is #19282
Hi, I've been around a while but apparently I need to post here. I'm very interested in cemeteries, especially in the areas of Morgan and Lawrence County, Alabama. Winston and Walker Counties, too, are up my alley.

Hello Joseph,

We would be happy to have you join the Cemeterist Project. Please repost, including the areas you would like to work in, on our "Open" Post and I will get you added to the team.

We're looking forward to working with you.

I was asked to help with the project a few years ago but due to health conditions, I was unable to help. I am slowly getting back to having the ability to help with research and pictures. I live in Colorado but I also have some availability to get help in areas of Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, Washington, and Rhode Island depending on what is needed.

Hello Mysti,

It's good to hear that you are doing better and we're happy to have you join us.

We have a new post for the Project for 2023. Please go there and click on the green "Answer this Post" button and let us know that you want to join.  I already have the information of the cemeteries you're interested in from your post above so you needn't list them again.

Thanks. We're looking forward to working with you.

Hi there! I want to join. I live in Santiago, Chile. And (this is a one day offer!) I'm visiting Buenos Aires, Argentina and I'm open to special requests if there's any particular need of taking photographs or gathering information.

I would like to join if I am not already a member. I will work on Scott County, Kentucky my home location and Montgomery County, Kentucky and Montgomery County, Ohio that are major areas of research for me.

Hi Lukas,

You are already a member but I have added the counties you are working in along with your name on the team roster in both Kentucky and Ohio.  If you would like to add any more comments, please go to the current g2g Cemeterist post.

Thanks!

Hi Vicki,

We would love to have you join the Project. Please go to the current Cemeterist g2g post and click on the green 'Answer this post' button and repost your information. I'll get back to you very soon.

Thank you!

I am not sure if I’m officially a member of a team or not. If not, I’d love to join a California team, specifically rural Northern California. I’ve already started a free space page for the College City Cemetery in Colusa County. My Wiki ID is Collins-17316. Thank you!

For a couple of years, I have been working on the free space profile for First Burial Ground, Woburn, Massachusetts. It's been kind of a side project, but I have added many photos, sources, biographies and gravestone facsimiles to WikiTree profiles of occupants. How can I help?

Thank you Steve for inviting me,

I belonged a while back, but I do not get out enough to work on photos like I used to. I do belong to FAG and right now I send sourcing to FAG memorials to add births or deaths to correct the FAG memorials. I send bio info when it is needed. (especially the ones I seem to be working on)

I will join when I have more of a chance to help in this area. This is a very important project.

Happy Researching, Lori

I am interested in this group. I live in North West London, England. I like to link cemeteries to profiles. I am interested in particularly cemeteries in and around London (Hertfordshire and Essex).

I can't visit cemeteries all over the world.  Is FindAGrave considered a reliable source, when consistent with other information?
by Philip Gale G2G6 Mach 3 (34.5k points)
Hi Philip, you are all setup with a badge now, and I have you on the roster for the Hertfordshire and Essex Cemeteries Teams!

The last step, if you choose, is to join our Google Group (just leave your Wiki-ID in the comments).

As far as FAG, they may be considered a source for post-1700 profiles, but they are not considered 'reliable'. Since entries on FAG are user-contributed, and often lack source information, we suggest that all information obtained is verified through original (primary) source documents.
Hi, thanks for this.

My ID for the Google group is Gale-1236.

Hi Steve,

Many thanks for your email and the nudge for me to sign up for the Cemeteries project. Although I am originally from Newcastle upon Tyne and have a number of records for that area, I am now based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I would be more than happy to take part in the project and I am willing, once the 'lockdown' is lifted to photograph any headstones etc. relevant to the area.

Kind regards,

Ron.
