Why does it try to match me DNA-wise with my adoptive family?

Hi Jim,

I'm assuming that your parental relationships are marked as non-biological. It appears that your DNA test shows up on your profile, and is correctly not propagated to your non-biological ancestors' profiles. The DNA Ancestors (View) tab from the DNA option of your WikiTree-ID drop-down menu on your profile correctly identifies your parents and their ancestors as non-biological. The Y Chromosome and Mitochondrial DNA sections on that page also both correctly indicate non-biological parents. But at the bottom of that page, in the X Chromosome section, your non-biological ancestors are being listed as contributing X DNA. It appears that the parental non-biological status is not being checked when the system is compiling that info, which may be a bug that needs to be fixed.

The DNA Confirmation tab also appears to provide instructions for how to confirm your parental relationships with your non-biological parents. I don't believe that this information should include non-biological relatives, so that also may be a bug that needs to be fixed.

I'd suggest editing your original post and adding the tag "bugs".

Maybe I should delete my account and start over?  This is becoming waayy too hard.
From what I can see, I think you have it set up correctly. Your DNA test is not getting propagated to the profiles of your non-biological ancestors. So that's working correctly. I just think there may be some bugs in the software that generates some of the DNA report pages. I don't believe that deleting your account and starting over will fix those DNA report pages.

I believe that some of the DNA report pages are correctly reflecting your non-biological ancestors, but other DNA report pages are not correctly taking your non-biological ancestors into account. If you add the bugs tag to your post, that should get the attention of the technical folks who can take a look to see if there are bugs in the software when generating those particular DNA report pages.

It will depend on whether you have connected your adoptive parents as your parents on your profile without marking them non-biological

I have marked my adoptive parents as non-biological.  Still tries to connect me with them via DNA.
That’s odd, but you have tagged DNA in your question so someone with more knowledge should be along soon.
Thanks.  I want this site to work for me, but it seems to be difficult.

DNA information updates overnight.  If you just added yours, or if you just marked your parents as adoptive (we can't see that), then maybe the issue will resolve by tomorrow.

I have helped several adopted people find their biological families and helped set them up on WikiTree. While the decision is up to them, I always recommend that they link their adoptive parents only in their Biography section and only link directly to biological parents (when they are identified.) This avoids the issue of marking parents as non-biological and any chance of having an incorrectly identified DNA relative. In the end it's a matter of personal choice.
