Small changes to Middle Name warning, Settings, Enhanced Editor, DNA test connections

Hi WikiTreers,

We just released some small technical changes.

1.) As some of you may have noticed (especially you Dutch WikiTreers) we no longer give a cautionary warning when saving changes if you have two names in the First Name field. Instead, there is an easier-to-dismiss alert beneath the field. And, as of today, you can permanently turn off this alert on your settings page if you prefer to never see it.

2.) The Enhanced Editor now works for editing free-space profiles and other pages, instead of just person profiles.

3.) We changed how we build DNA test connections. Instead of rebuilding them all every night we will now only be rebuilding those that need to be rebuilt. This will help us save server resources.

If you notice any problems, please reply here. With the DNA test connections, especially, we'll depend on members spotting problems.

Thanks,

Chris

I have question I not sure why I not showing up on list to this person DNA wise. She is my 8th great grandmother. The Barbra listed in DNA hit I show 5th cousin in Gedmatch with and these Wilsons one of my Direct lines. Can someone exsplain this.

Excellant changes, these.
Billie, an 8G grandmother is too far distant to be likely to share significant DNA. It is not impossible, but it is too unlikely to be highlighted on a profile.

Thanks for being able to turn off the two names warning - big help!  Also when going over to do that I found I could turn off the location name suggestions which is nice too.

These might just be small bits of news, but it's all very welcome to hear!

I'm sure that many of those working on French Canadian and Franco-American profiles or any covered by the Quebecois Project will rejoice in addition to our Nederlander cousins.

Any chance that the "Scratch Pad" on the Nav Home Page will also have use of the Enhanced Editor?

Final step, apart from totally abolishing the WikiTree only implementation of middle name, to making this acceptably workable for Dutch and other cultures is to have Gedcom Import also respect the "Disable Middle Name Warning for First Name fields" setting by not automatically splitting Given Names in PFN and Middle Name.

Also one has still to set the "no middle name" radiobutton to get rid of the irritating
[middle name?] in the presented name, like here

Thanks a lot for the change in the Middle name warning. It's indeed a relief to finally get rid of this obnoxious message.

The "Disable Location Field Style Note" doesn't seem to work as intended. I checked the option and saved, but now my own browser suggestions are gone, and instead I get the Familysearch suggestions. It should probably be mentioned that I already had disabled the suggestions a long time ago.

Yes, the "Disable Location Field Style Note" does not seem to work all that reliably.

Like you, I always have the FamilySearch locations turned off, using the field memory of my browser. So every time I close my browser I have to hide the autolocations.

When this new setting appeared, I immediately checked it  to "off" - this did not have any adverse effect. But after your comment here, I have tried turning my browser off and on again - and the setting does not seem to hold; I still have to turn it off manually from a profile at the start of a session.

Edit: perhaps it means something else?
I tried it again, logging out and restarting the browser. The box in the settings stay ticked but has no effect in the profiles.

Thanks, Eva. I hadn't noticed that the "Hide place name suggestions" had returned, and didn't realise that I had to click it. You've made my day, again smiley

I still think that the place name suggestions should be auto-disabled by the new "Disable location field style note" option. Otherwise, it makes no sense.

I agree - that's what it should be doing. I cannot really imagine what else it would be supposed to do - just trying to keep an open mind ;-)
Also, the "Hide place name suggestions" only appears on the edit person screen, not when adding new persons. That's probably part of the reason why I didn't notice it.
Oh, I never even noticed when the autolocations started appearing on the screen for adding a person.

I'm not sure the checkbox in the settings has any effect at all. But the family I'm working on today is too complicated for using for further testing. I hope it'll be noticed that there's something amiss.
The setting has to do with the note that appears in the upper right corner that says you don't have to use the suggestions. It doesn't do anything with the actual suggestions.

Jamie, thanks for your explanation. I still think that we need an option in the Settings for disabling the place name suggestions. The only place to set it currently, as you surely know, is beneath the Death place in the Edit profile screen. It would be a lot cleaner to move it to the new Settings#Misc section.

And I guess that it's your work on the new settings that has unset our previous preferences about the place name suggestions smiley

Yes! Finally we are allowed to use our Dutch (and many other countries) own naming convention. Thanks a lot Chris.

oh good, not just the Dutch who have a problem with the ''middle names''.  Don't exist in French, but the thing kept coming back.  Now fixed with this nice little bit of info.  laugh

Turning off location suggestions also useful, since FamilySearch just do not fit with our standards.
