Hello Connectors!

Here are the 2020 April/May tracker results.

Thanks to all who participated in the April/May challenge.

The Connector's Challenge Rules:

  1.  Pick an existing profile that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: if you are a member of the Connectors Project, you'll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person's name at the top of their profile if they aren't connected.)
  2.  Add a profile for a first-degree relative to that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue to do this on this profile and those profiles that are connected to it until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation and connection of every profile you make!
  3.  Answer this post. This lets us know you're participating this month. It's easiest for us to track your trail here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just make sure you comment "Connected to Smith-000" when you make the actual connection to the already existing, already connected profile, replacing Smith-000 with the profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect.
  4. The tally is not of profiles created (like the summer Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process to do so. But the connection only counts as 1.
  5.  If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.
  6.  Let us know if you'd like a Connector's Badge for participating. That makes you part of our project-and we'd love to have you! The person who makes the most connections each month will get a Top Connector template for their profile. Stats are kept and updated on the Sourcerers Challenge page. Current standings in the tracker are here.
  7.  The challenge runs from 15 May to 14 June 2020.

I will try to do some this month. Thanks.

So far this year at least 110 WikiTreers have participated in the Connectors Challenge and have connected over 1300 individuals or branches!

I am getting confused because there are so many ways to connect. when I investigate a source and find it is not connected, is it ok to make another profile, even if it is also not connected? for example, I am looking for the family of Harold Cox, Cox-27964. I can't find his grandfather, but have found some links going back generations for his wife's tree. I could start with her grandparents who have a more unusual name Eslinger, with profiles on wikitree with the same last name from the same town. I have done a lot of looking at Eslingers and Aslingers. I would like to organize them by putting them on wikitree, even if they are not connected to my original quest.
Yes. You are adding the necessary profile until you make a connection. You may not finish in one month. I literally once added more than 200 profiles before I made a connection. And it took me more than 6 months. I even had to leave it and come back a year later to find the connection. It was so satisfying. To be fair, the surname was Ream, which is a surname study I started. I am still determined to connect all the Reams.

Sometimes the connections are very easy and sometimes they are not so obvious. It's all in the journey (at least for me).
So it is ok to make profiles to find the connection, even if the profile only has one source? I feel like I am going willy-nilly. I know in the profiles from my GEDCOM, I try to find BMD sources. Also, is family search ID a good source?
Just a Family Search ID is not a good source. BMD is great, or at least a census. Even Find A Grave is better than nothing.

It is true that it is easy to go willy-nilly trying to find the connection. I just did one like that. I kept both windows open and checked and re-checked that I was not going sideways! Sometimes you just get lucky and you find a parent or grandparent already here.
quote> So it is ok to make profiles to find the connection

Yes, for example ... if you find one lone profile, say "John Smith", you can create his father and grandfather, and then link them to their great-grandfather (which is a pre-existing connected profile on our global wikitree), and that counts as ONE connection for "John Smith". The father and grandfather you created are good additions to our global wikitree, but they do NOT count in this "Connectors Challenge", because they are NEW profiles.
Nancy, while we strive to have profiles connected to the main tree there is actually nothing wrong with unconnected profiles! As long as they are not duplicates and have a source, you’re still contributing to the overall growth if wikitree.
Can I have a badge?
I made three connections this month. Can I have a badge? Still working on the fourth but my mouse broke. Harder for me to work without it.

I'm going to try this with some unconnected people in my watch list. Do I tell you who I am working on here? Does it count if I created the profile last month without realizing that they were not connected?

I am going to start with Bliss-5029.

1. Added  Bliss-5110 as father of Bliss-5029

2. Added Bliss-4226 as father of Bliss-5110

Connected.

Next I am working on Cox-27694. Harold Cox has a sister, Lelia and father James, born in Tennessee.

My great aunt Lelia Cox Alexander was born in Indiana and lived in Tennessee part of her life. Her father is James O. the other Lelia's father was James H. James O was 5-6 years older than James H. I created Cox-27694, thinking he was part of my family. So far, no link.

James Harmon Cox(Cox-28624) Is the son of

John Travis Cox(Cox-28736) is the son of

Riley Cox (Cox-8965)

Connected

Jesse Cox (Cox-25458) is the father of

William Carrell Cox (Cox-28745) who married

Martha Elrod (Elrod-1330) who is the daughter of

George Washington Elrod (Elrod-363)

Connected

Can you please check the Connectors Challenge tracking at ...

https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/connectorschallenge/20200515/User.htm

It seems NEW profiles are being created which according to the rules, do NOT count in this challenge. Thank you
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (288k points)
I misunderstood. Did not realize the tracker counted every new profile as a connection. I thought it only did that if I commented that I had made a connection. Sorry. Are there instructions that I missed?
The results tracker is not counting how many profiles you created. It is counting the number of times you choose to click on "Connectors Challenge" to CLAIM that you have indeed made ONE connection to link a pre-existing profile.

So in other words, whenever you create ANY new profile, you should NOT be clicking on "Connectors Challenge", because it does not satisfy the rules. You CAN make new profiles to make a connection, but ALL the profiles you create are not counted, only the old (or pre-existing profile) counts for this challenge.

at the top of this page ... rule #4

quote> the tally is not of profiles created (like the summer Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process to do so. But the connection only counts as 1.

by Lucy Selvaggio-Diaz G2G6 Pilot (821k points)

2. Proposed a merge between Vail-1065 into Vail-926. Vail-926 is connected. They were an unmerged match, which I removed because I found a source to confirm the LNAB of the conflicting mothers. A merge was also proposed for them. CONNECTED! (provided the merges are completed).

I accidentally connected -1 to her husband. CONNECTED!

  1. Daniel E Duryea (Hollywood Actor)-208

I saw this post in G2G and thought that the Connectors Group would be an incentive to start working on my branches I started and have not connected.

As I got into looking for connections for my daughter-in-laws parents I found that I had created a duplicate Profile.  When I was new to WikiTree, I din't know you need to try nickname searches before adding.  I had used her full name 'Harriet Louisa' and the other profile use just the nickname 'Hattie'.  I have created a Pending Merge.

My question is, does a merge connection count as a connection? If not, I will have to work on finding another one.

I am in for trying to make a connection this month.  Please award the badge.  I am exciting for the incentive to add to my family.  I have been working on helping others I forgot about myself.

Yes a merge will count as a connection for this challenge as long as it meets the other needs ,,,

- one profile must be connected to the global wikitree

- one profile must not be connected to the global wikitree

- both profiles had to be created before this month's Connectors Challenge started.
Ok, I had Stedman-762 connected with merge of his wife Hickok-493 with Hickok-95.
