I have found a bad error in my family tree. I have the mother of Samuel Findley Thompson (Thompson-10545) as dying before he was born. I have been searching for proof that I have the correct parent names for him, but to no avail. His mother was supposedly a daughter of the Revolutionary War Patriot named Samuel Findley (Findley-19). I cannot find a good source for information about Samuel Findley's children. Does anyone have good information about Samuel Thompson's parents?

History of Butler County Pennsylvania, 1895

Biographical Sketches, Chapter 72 (Pgs. 1035-1083)

SAMUEL FINDLEY, SR., was one of the pioneers of Clay township, Butler county, where he settled in 1798. He built his cabin in the midst of an unbroken forest and spent the remaining years of his life in making a home for himself and family. He was a native of Ireland, and immigrated to Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, with his brother William, prior to the Revolution. His brother was a soldier in the Continental army, and after peace was established became one of the most distinguished legislators of the State. He was a member of the first Constitutional Convention of Pennsylvania, and was elected to Congress in 1790, as a Jeffersonian Democrat, and served in that body for twenty years. He wrote a treatise on the funding of the public debt, also a history of the Whiskey Insurrection in Pennsylvania, in 1794, which he assisted in quelling, and other political pamphlets. He died in Westmorland [sic] county, in April, 1829. Samuel FINDLEY, Sr., had three sons and three daughters who came with him to Butler county, and afterward became well known settlers. The sons were Samuel, Robert and David. The daughters were Mrs. Elizabeth THOMPSON, Mrs. Mary CHRISTY and Mrs. Martha MILFORD. Samuel became a prominent minister in the United Presbyterian church, his field of labor for many years being in eastern Ohio, where he died in the latter part of the sixties. Robert and David patented lands in Clay township, a portion of which yet remains in the Findley name. They spent their lives in Clay township, and both died in the year 1843. Samuel FINDLEY, Sr. was commissioned by Governor MCKEAN one of the associate judges of Butler county, July 4, 1803, and served on the bench until his death, in 1816.

I believe the Elizabeth Thompson in the biographical sketch may be the mother of your Samuel Findley Thompson (1809-1865). She was married to John Thompson.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Ann!

Now I just need to discover why Elizabeth's death date shows to be before Samuel Findley Thompson's birth date! Do you have any clues about that?
Hey Angelique:

I don't think we can assume anything about the dates of the Findleys and Thompsons because we have no church or town records (yet) that document dates. I did find a book that a Reverend Samuel Findley Thompson wrote about the Thompson family:

"Thompson and Given families with their ancestral lines and present branches" -Rev. Samuel F. Thompson, Ellen Kerr Given. This book, "Thompson and Given families", by Samuel Findley Thompson, is a replication of a book originally published before 1898.

You can read it for free at www.archive.org   But this Rev Samuel Findley Thompson has no connection to the Butler County family.

It may be worth going to about 1900 and checking all the data you have - original facts - to be sure you didn't get off track.

Regards,

Ann
Thanks again, Ann! I'll keep researching.

I am a descendant of Samuel Findley Thompson and Maria Johnston through their youngest daughter Annie Maria.  I do not have Elizabeth Findley Thompson's death date but have copies of P/A's that son Robert Graham Thompson sent to her heirs which led to the names of John Thompson and Elizabeth Findley Thompson's nine children whose families I have been researching.  I have not found a Thompson family to which our John Thompson belonged.  Some people have him mixed up with a Quaker John Thompson but the Quaker records show their John Thompson married to an Elizabeth and lists children's names that are not our John and Elizabeth's children.  If you are interested in any of the information I have, please e-mail me.

Thank you for offering! Yes, I would be interested to see what you've got. I can't find an email address for you, though.
