Original records for VA immigration 1650s?

+1 vote

I hope to view the original records for the transport to the colony of VA during the 1650s for several people.

I have found 3 transcript sources

1. Nugent. Cavaliers and Pioneers; abstracts of Virginia land patents and grants, 1623-1800; Richmond, Press of the Dietz Print Co., 1934. p. 145 https://archive.org/details/cavalierspioneer00nuge

2. Greer, George Cabell. Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666, 1912. http://www.evmedia.com/virginia/ accessed 3 May 2020.

3. de Cognets, Jr. Louis J. compiler. English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records; Princeton, NJ, 1958. Digitized by Internet Archive 2012. http://www.ancestraltrackers.net/va/resources/english-duplicates-lost-virginia-records.pdf accessed 7 May 2020

However, because of spelling variations, the hand writing of the day and discrepancies of transcriptions between these 3 sources, I'd like to see the original records. Does anyone know where I find them, hopefully digitized/online?

Thanks so much!

The Virginia land grants and patents are digitized at the Library of Virginia.  For a variety of reasons - penmanship, age, discoloration of paper - they are almost impossible to read.  I trust Nugent’s transcripts.  I haven’t found discrepancies in the ones I’ve managed to decipher.  My experience with 17th century records is that names are spelled pretty randomly - sometimes there are differences in a single document.

Greer used the same records.

Thanks so much, Kathie. I figured Greer used the same records but interpreted a name differently than Nugent. [John Macklett (Greer) vs. Jane Macklett (Nugent, p. 256)]
