How to alter the text of the medals sticker without altering the category

When adding a medal (military, civilian, or otherwise) using the medal sticker, it is important to use the correct spelling/verbiage of the medal or else you will end up creating a new category.  When the medal sticker is used, the profile is automatically added with the medal category.

For example, if you add:

{{Medal

|image = Military_Medals-118.jpg

|Medal = Distinguished Service Cross

}}

you will get:

and the profile will be placed in the category for "Distringuished Service Cross."

But what if you want to change the text of the medal.  There are many times where this is needed because of multiple awards of the same medal, medal devices, campaign stars, etc.

For example, the medal "Bronze Star" may be best described as "Bronze Star with V device" if the medal was awarded with the additional distinction of "with valor."  Or for subsequent awards, the "Army Commendation Medal" might need to be written as "Army Commendtion Medal with two oak leaf clusters" (3 awards of this medal).

To modify the text that shows on the medal without altering the category, under the line "Medal = " write in the text that you want to appear and then  insert an extra line of code:

Category =

followed by the correct category.

To change this:

{{Medal

|image = Military_Medals-118.jpg

|Medal = Distinguished Service Cross

}}

to this:

{{Medal

|image = Military_Medals-118.jpg

|Medal = Distinguished Service Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster

}}

and maintain the correct category, add this line of code:

{{Medal

|image = Military_Medals-118.jpg

|Medal = Distinguished Service Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster

|Category = Distinguished Service Cross

}}

I hope that this is helpful to anyone who has ever run into this problem.

And if you're looking for a medal for a US service member, you can find most of them here:

Thank you for sharing this information. Stickers can be challenging to get right.

You did an excellent job on the profile for Francis Currey.

Thanks SJ, this is really helpful! And this space page for American decorations looks really great.

I ran into a similar issue when adding the sticker to someone who received the Legion of Honour. If you follow the example given on the Medal template, this will create a red "Legion of Honour" category and because of the ranks of this award it's impractical to put them in the medal parameter. Using the category parameter works fine, however.

I use this code:

{{Medal

|medal=Légion d'honneur

|image=Mil_template_images.png

|category=Chevaliers de la Légion d'honneur}}

See Émilie Calmette.

Hello All,

      Yea so I have a couple of other questions because I am really confused. Apparently there are different locations for Medal Stickers? A lady who is tutoring me on becoming a Data Doctor sent me the link to "Sticker" and I was adding some of the WWII stickers to profile when I noticed a subsection for Medals.

Categories: Stickers

I went in and was rather disappointed that there were only three American Medals, CMA (Image of all three at once) Bronz Star and Purple Heart. All the rest of the medals were commonwealth medals and the folder is managed by somebody in Australia.

So  I dinked around and figure out what to do to make the Sticker I want and did so. I added 7 or 8 of them and then put them on my Uncles Profile

 Sawyer-6199.

 A nice lady came along later and informed me that I needed to be more careful in making them. Sorry, we Jarheads are not known for our spelling. But she also pointed me to another Folder.

CategoriesUnited States of America, Military Decorations

Now I have gone in that folder and I find lots of stuff including Honors List (That is why I say she is a nice lady because somehow my uncle in those lists). and Halaluya not only is it organized it has American Medals. Only it does not have easy to follow Instruction does not produce the same quality sticker, Bummer!

So I have about another half dozen or so Medal to add and no clue as to which folder I should be using. I have not done anything yet because while the United States of America, Military Decorations folder is much better laid out, it does not have easy to follow (Cut and Past this Code) as the other site and does not produce the same quality sticker.

First? Where should I be going? I am assuming the USA MD folder but I am going to ask?

The second is an offer. If you need Help uploading Images in a file like the Medals section, I would be happy to help. Also may want to put something in about adding your medal winner to the lists.

Sorry, Frustrated Jarhead but Hey willing to help!

It is my (eventual) goal to integrate this page with the medals and awards categories.
