Hello to all at the Magna Carta project

I am currently trying to expand my ancestral links through the family Doyley [aka: Oilly, D’Oley, Etc], [see: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/D'Oyly-46]. The project is particularly difficult because of this range of “names used at date of birth”.

I note there are some existing entries [managed by others] with limited sourcing data, But one or two do make refence to Magna Carta associations [see: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/D_Oyley-3]. In my own interest It may be useful to confirm this detail and use it to expand these source references. This may further enhancing my WT pedigree, whilst helping your project.

Re Magna Carta Project Affiliate membership

Hello to All at the Magna Carta Project group

Thank you so much for your follow-up notes.

It is only recently that I have developed the family pedigree back pre-1500 and into England’s medieval aristocracy.

I approached your group whilst experiencing   ‘some-frustration’   in trying to create a credible pedigree-line through the Doyley family-tree, some of whom are entered on WikiTree under many birth-name variations.

One of my lines of research starts with Robert Doyley-39 [b-abt-1564] and will end with Gilbert D’Oilly who is reported to have accompanied William the Conqueror from Normandy.

In researching these Doyley’s I found a ‘Magna-Carta-Source’ refence attached to William  “D_Oyley-3”, which raised my interest in the possibility of Magna Carta Project group helping.

On further studies I find that I can claim to be a 25th Great-grand-son of Henry de Bohun [one of the Surety Barons]. Via the Arundel’s…

I am not sure where this leads me to being of value to the Magna Carta -- Project Group. I do not believe I have a lot to offer. Although I have no doubt that this is not the last of my Magna Carta discussions…

Would the above interests rate as being affiliated? If so I will proceed.

Once again Thanks for the welcoming notes Regards & Cheers Peter Patten-336

William Doyley is mentioned by Richardson only as grandfather of one Margaret Knollys.  She married Harry Belknap, the actual trailperson.  William's ancestry isn't given.

Sidetracking slightly though, your ancestry converges with that of Charles Calvert, Lord Baltimore, at Sir John Arundell-154 and his wife Eleanor/Elizabeth Grey-11.  Those two between them have book descents from over a dozen Magna Carta barons.

Peter,

Your interest in Magna Carta genealogy is appreciated.  There are a number of areas where you could assist the project as an Affiliate,  I would suggest joining one (or more if you have the time and interest) of the topical teams such as the Pre-1500 Team or Post-1500 Team .  If you are new to medieval genealogy and source materials you may want to begin in the Post-1500 Team.

Members of the Magna Carta Project, both badged and affiliate alike. work to document. improve and confirm the profiles and direct Magna Carta lineages (also known as trails) that  extend from a colonial Magna Carta "Gateway Ancestor" to one or more Magna Carta surety barons.

Unfortunately. we do not have the manpower resources to research, develop or confirm the personal lineages of project members.  We can, however, give some assistance in the way of basic research methodology and reliable source materials.  In some cases, a project member may have special knowledge of a particular person or trail you are interested in and may be willing, time permitting, to answer an inquiry or provide some additional assistance.  You may also be able to find help or answers to specific questions by posting to the project discussion group, or to G2G

Hi RJ,     Thank you for your interest, In the mean-time I had been working with ‘WT-relationship-tool’ and came up with the following numbers: that thanks to John Arundell-154 [or his kin] it is indicated that I have relationships with all but one of the 25 Maga Carta Baron’s, Fifteen as Great-Grandfathers, Six as Cousins and Three as a Great-Grand-Nephew ‘of’… I also note [with more examination to be done] that not a lot of work has been carried out in adding Magna Carta confirmation relationship tags to those families between the Barons and the Arundell’s. I am new to the project group, but with 30 odd generations between I and the barons one wonders where to start?......

Peter.  as one wise man said,  "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."  Starting with you, work backwards one profile at a time confirming each parent-child relationship by supporting each direct relationship in the trail with original sources (if possible). If original sources are not available attempt to locate reliable derivative sources in order to establish some validity for a direct lineage between you and a Magna Carta surety baron or a Magna Carta descendant whose relationship to a surety baron has been validated, A RIchardson documented Magna Carta Gateway Ancestor would be one example of a MC descendant whose lineage has been established and is considered to be accurate.
