Is that my ancestor on the Dawes Rolls?

I keep finding information from Dawes cards attached to the profiles of people who were not, and could not possibly have been, on the Dawes Rolls.  There are three free-space pages of information on the Dawes, but I thought it might be time to reiterate the basic conditions here on G2G:

Did your ancestor live in Indian Territory between 1895 and 1905? To be on the Dawes you had to live in Indian Territory by 1896 (all five tribes made censuses between 1890 and 1896) and still be there (and alive) in 1903 or be listed as a Mississippi Choctaw who had moved to Indian Territory during the Dawes period and met certain other requirements. Children born between 1896 and 1907 were also eligible with proof of birth to qualifying parents.

Was he or she Cherokee (including some Adopted Delaware and Shawnee), Choctaw (including some Mississippi Choctaw), Creek(Muscogee), Chickasaw, or Seminole, the white spouse of a tribal member, or a person formerly enslaved by a tribal member (Freedmen)? The Dawes only applied to those tribes, certain spouses, and certain Freedmen. Other tribes in Indian Territory or Oklahoma territory are not included. White spouses were only eligible if married before 1876 and still married to a Cherokee spouse.

Did he or she live in the area controlled by his her or tribe? Cherokee had to live in the Cherokee Nation, Choctaw in the Choctaw Nation, etc.

Only if you answered yes to all these questions is it possible that your ancestor is on one of the Dawes rolls.

Thank you Kathie for this reminder  regarding the Dawes Rolls. I know it is very confusing to new researchers who are eager to trace their  ancestors and sometimes latch on to others of the same name.

There were several Rolls and it can be confusing to those that are not aware. Dawes is one most people seem to be aware of. There were several rolls.

Since people looking will probably look at this post I am going to add a link to find some of the other Rolls. Maybe that will help them find the right connection if there is one. Detailed Information on Select Rolls. The Dawes is included in that list and each one offers explanations and help with understanding them.
