This is the Kiwi Crew 2020 Connect-a-thon Chat Page

For any questions regarding the 2020 Connect-a-thon.

Do we have any family groups from NZ that are not connected?

Perhaps a note of one of their profiles from each group can be posted here?  Just for the Record.

Live Links to the tables that are updated weekly

Unlinked Profiles associated with New Zealand  (this is the one I try to work on every day, taking single profiles and trying to find/add related profiles)

Unconnected Profiles associated with New Zealand ( those that may be linked to others but not to the main tree )

Does anyone know if the BDM--DIA database is down for updating this weekend?? (10-12 July)?

Because I cannot currently get access to it, and seeing as how it is currently Sunday morning, in NZ, it is unikely to be fixed until Monday morning...

I hope this update wont happen again next weekend.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Yes, Robynne, it was down from 10pm to 10am (or even a bit later).
Thanks Fiona. The site is now back up and running...

I wasn't going to do this one as I have a busy week next week, but I can do some work to help if I am told what needs to be done. So I have registered. I've looked at the links above. Many of the profiles on the first page are locked. Guidance as to how best to approach this task for New Zealand profiles would be good. I am best for those that go back to Scotland as I am very good on those sources now having done the Tartan Trail part II.
by Margaret Allison G2G6 Mach 4 (41.4k points)
If a profile is locked (red private or black unlisted) then you can only ignore them. Noone can do anything for them.

The idea of the connect-a-thon is to create whatever extra profiles are required (with at least one source) in order to connect one profile or a small family tree to the global tree.

Unconnected profiles are those that have a small orange figure next to the name at the top of the profile.

I will add your name to the team.

Just do the best you can. The main point is to have some fun!!

Start off with your own Watch tree for unconnected profiles.

And after that there will be a list of unconnected profiles on the Kiwi Crew page.

Use the tracker to record every new profile that you create. Each new profile will be counted towards the team score.
I have read through the Connect-A-Thon page. I see that all you need to do is add another profile to an existing profile. My understanding is that a profile is counted even if the profile is already connected by some other way. Is that so?

In that case I will work on a section of my family that was added years back as a GEDCOM then orphaned. Plenty of children, spouses, parents etc to add there. Otherwise, I will look for those with an orange figure. Except I can see none when I skim down my watchlist. But I have found a Unconnected list that I can use. But still can't see that orange figure. What exactly am I looking for?
You are looking for profiles that have the small orange figure next to the name - which means they are unconnected - so that you can go find prents, grandparents and other ancestors and ty to connect them to someone who is already connected.

Here is one example of an unconnected profile

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Taylor-7683

If the profile is orphaned then you must adopt the profile first, then try and  connect it, and once it is connected, then you can orphan it again

Once you have made that connection, the orange figure will not disappear immediately - it will only disappear after the next update so there may be a delay of up to 24 hours.

If you have no unconnected profiles on your watchlist, you can try the links from Graeme above in the 2nd answer on this page - they will have an updated list of Kiwi unconnected profiles.

I see that all you need to do is add another profile to an existing profile. My understanding is that a profile is counted even if the profile is already connected by some other way. Is that so?
 by Margaret Allison

.

In short - yes, if you attach a profile to an existing profile as child, spouse, sibling, parent, it will count.  (You don't have to have created the profile you are attaching.  You may have found it already on Wikitree, but it's not yet attached to its family.)

The confusion with this arises, I believe, from the difference between connected (which would be better termed "attached") and Connected, with the latter meaning Connected to the larger Tree (the anchors at the bottom of a profile show that Connection if it is there).

I CANNOT see any orange figure next to the name when I clicked on the link (and neither could my husband)

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Taylor-7683

Where is it? Can someone do a screen shot as this is causing me much frustration? I have looked through a few on Graeme's list and I don't see them there either. What am I not doing that I should to get them?

Margaret
The Orange Figure is only shown for those with the Connector Badge. If you look on the second row of my badges on my profile you will see a light blue badge with Jigsaw pieces as the picture.
So that is why I can't see that figure because I am fairly new on here and not done any connecting before?
The connector badge. Thumps head on table. I completely forgot about that.

I am so used to seeing that little orange figure, I forget that is connected to that badge!!

Sorry Margaret!!

As of now we have about 36 hours to go before this THON begins.  (Friday 8 AM in the USA/Canada and 12 Midnight Saturday in NZ)

The team participants are currently as follows. I think the registration will close soon. So this will pretty much be the final team list

    Robynne Lozier - Captain
    Cassandra Miles
    Charlene Newport
    Maxx Martin
    Fiona McMichael
    Graeme Olney
    Nic Donnelly
    Norma Crozier
    Richard Shelley
    Campbell Braddock
    Sharlene Douglas-Hurawai
    Margaret Allison
    Brigitte Theuma
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Yes, Registration for the Connect-a-thon has now ended.

We are now less than 24 hours away from the start time!!
Thirteen on this team - but still only ten on the dashboard. Come on you others, do your bit. Just find a profile and start adding.
Dont get too upset Margaret.

This is a fun activity and is not in any way mandatory or compulsory.

Campbell has already explained that he may not be able to do much - he is pretty busy with RL things.

Sharlene is a newbie and may simply be hesitant to start up and make mistakes or she may be busy.

Brigitte was a last minute addition and she too may be busy.

This is supposed to be fun, but we all know that sometimes RL just gets in the way!!

If they could join us, they would.

Also they may not be free or available until Monday NZT - I think that is what Campbell may have hinted at. Dont quote me on that. LOL

Just so you know and for the record - I am posting this at 4 PM Friday NZT and 12 midnght Friday EDT - or 8 hours before this marathon begins.

I have been told to expect some visitors to my apartment sometime on Friday - so I may not be able to start on time. I possibly may not be available for as much as 6 or 7 hours after the start of this marathon.

If I am lucky these visitors arrive early so I can start early.

If I am not lucky, I may have to wait the whole 6 - 7 hours...

Just so you know why I may or may not be absent.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
well now all I can do and sit and wait for these visitors to show up - so I will work on some profiles while I wait.

I have finally just connected Lorraine Mollers family - but that of course wont update until tomorrow and Lorraines profile is currently black unlisted!!
OK visitors have just been and gone so I am now available and online!!!

Coming up to 12 Noon EDT  - which is 0400 Saturday NZT - and everyone in NZ is asleep!!

I should be OK to stay online for the next 12 hours!!

Well as per usual (lately with the -thons) I now have to work over the weekend ( got called in last night to pick up someone elses roster) so Ive done a few this morning and will do what I can in my down time.
by Graeme Olney G2G6 Pilot (142k points)
No worries Graeme. Thanks.
OK - 1st work day done - lets see if I can get back on track - cant let our cousins from across the ditch get the better of us :-)

So I've done one - and went to add it to the tracker. But I can see no Connect-A-Thon tracker. What do I use? Is it the Saturday Sprint?
by Margaret Allison G2G6 Mach 4 (41.4k points)
Well, I'm on the list, so that must have worked!

There is no tracker - any profile added through another profile is automatically counted. Check here after you've added one - https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ConnectAThon/TeamAndUser.htm

Like Cassandra said - any profile you add, is automatically counted Margaret!!
Thanks all. So I have started. Going through the children of a couple I added who are not connected.

OK - It's time for me to get to bed.

It is 0200 Sat AM EDT and 6 PM Sat in NZ right now.

See you guys later!!
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
I'm stopping as well. Prior commitments. Assuming I get home at a decent time I may get a few more profiles added otherwise it'll stack onto tomorrow

How do I join this?

Been adding profiles to one of my branches, didn’t see the notice of the Thon...
by Kerry Tankard G2G4 (4.8k points)
It’s too late now, unfortunately, got this a-thon. However, if you add the tag the_kiwi_crew to your profile, you’ll get updates on what this group is doing.
Sorry Kerry.

I should have mentioned this to you, but you only joined us a week ago, and I didnt think you wanted to rush into things.

We do marathons 4 times a year and the next one will be in October. You will be more than welcome to join us then.

Cheers

I've been going steadily and slowly, adding profiles and trying to find spouses. The first family still isn't connected, but the others I am doing should be now. I have finished for today, will be back sometime in the morning.

Hi everyone.

Update!!

It's been 6 hours since I started back on this thon..

I found a whole entire Gothard family from NZ that are UNCONNECTED so I am franctically adding new profiles - children and spouses to try and find a connection!!

Still no luck!!

How are you guys doing on your unconnecteds?

The Kiwi crew is currently in 10th place on the teams list which is a great place to be. In the top half of the teams.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Richard Shelley,

I sent you a PM. If you can please respond ASAP, that would be great!!

The subject line is - William George Mcdonald politicians

Thank you

Robynne
I'm just adding family of spouses of people I already have as I can't see who is connected or not.
That's fair enough Margaret!!

when this is over you can probably ask for the Connectors badge, if you dont get it already because you were a participant.

Am pretty sure that's how I got my connectors badge
Margaret, if you look at the bottom of the profile it shows the connections to Henry 8th etc. Also if you look on your global connections page, there is a link to your unconnected profiles.

I don't have a Connector's badge and I participated in last year's connect-a-thon.

I believe the badge is related to the Connector's Project, and the monthly challenges.

Fiona, I have only two families on my unconnected list that belong to me. I have added lots to the first but still not connected as far as I can see. The other is too hard for this contest.

When I look at my profiles, I do not see connections to Henry VIII or anyone else. They are the ones I am doing at present.
Remember margaret - the system will take up to 24 hours to be updated. That usually happens overnight in the EDT - or in the evenings for you - more or less between  6 PM and 12 midnight most days in NZ

If you add any new profiles during those times, (6 PM - 12 AM) then they wont get updated and they have to wait for the next night   It can be annoying sometimes.
Melanie is right.

I did some sprints back in 2017, right after i started up the kiwi crew team. I wanted to get in some practice  for my first source-a-thon and I think that is how I got my connectors badge. It was so long ago!!!

Sorry Margaret.

But there is also a current thread in the G2G that says this - Join the Connectors Project

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/844395/love-to-connect-the-unconnected-join-the-connectors-project

Or you can ask to join. You dont HAVE to do any of their Sprints and challenges. When you join, you get the connectors badge.

You can do this anytime - keeping in mind that the admins may be doing this marathon, so you might need to be patient.

You go kiwi crew!!!

As of 9.45 PM Sat  EDT and 1.45 PM Sunday NZT  - We are now back in 8th place ahead of some much larger teams.

keep up the great work!!

While I am not  currently not adding new profiles, I had to stop to add sources, because a good part of the unconnected tree I am working on, had only a family tree as a source - so I had to go and find some REAL sources!!

Hopefully now that i have done those, I can get back to adding more spouses and children.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
+6 votes
OK - I was finally able to connect the very large unconnected tree I was working on, after having to go and add a LOT of sources - because the only source these profiles had, was a family tree!! And that is a NO-NO!!

I finally found a connection so I have made that connection and hopefully the 40+ original profiles, plus the 10-20 profiles that i have created will all be connected in the morning.

I am going to stop for the day. I have been doing this pretty solidly for 12 hours. It has now just gone 12 AM midnight (Sunday) in Canada and 4 PM Sunday in NZ.

The team is still stitting in 8th place so we are doing very well!!  Way to go kiwi crew!!!

I will see you all in 12 hours or so!!

Cheers

Robynne
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Thank you for your hard work. I have had to take a small break. Coming up to 100, but I do write little biographies for them. Lots to go back to do.
Well done, Robynne. That's me finished. I'm sorry I haven't done as much as I wished, but tomorrow is a bit busy. I have made two connections on one couple, but I think they were already connected through the only child that had been created. Margaret, I also have a huge number of profiles that now need considerable work as I've only added births or marriages.
I'm also going to be spending a lot of time going back to the profiles I've added, more fully sourcing them and writing short bios. Will keep me busy!
I was adding a family, and I hit a connection with a profile already there for one sibling - no parents. So that existing profile now has a family back several generations. I've switched to a New Zealand family where I see siblings missing and their children. Their spouses could connect to others.
