New member introducing myself

I guess I am completely new to this.  My family and I are taking a trip up to Vermont and I remember my Dad (John David Sargent, deceased) saying that our ancestors were from Vermont. So was doing a quick search to see what I could find on the Sargent family in Vermont.  I have named my oldest son John Sargent(middle name) (last name Hashemi) after my father and thought it might be cool for him to know more about his maternal ancestry. Interesting that the "first white man" born in Vermont was John Sargent! Perhaps a relation of ours! Never thought of our family history going all the way to the very beginning of the colonization of the Americas.  My father John Sargent married a First Nations woman of the Iroquois nation.  He met her when he was in the army in WW2 and she was a nurse.  They had one son John David Sargent Jr. who now lives in British Columbia and my dad married my mother Aili Honkanen (Finnish) and they moved to Zimbabwe in Southern Africa where I was born.  Now that I live in New Jersey I am interested in exploring my American heritage and would like to introduce my children to it as a way of engaging them in American and world history.
