James (John) William Barrett (~1836-1906) and Roswell B Barrett (1844-1919) appear in the 1850 Dallas County, TX census in the home of James and Mary Armstrong.

History of Dallas County, Texas: From 1837 to 1887 (John Henry Brown) states that they were orphans who came to the area in 1846 with the Armstrong family.

James William Barrett maintains throughout his life that he was born in Texas, but they were in Arkansas in 1844 for Roswell's birth, and that is where the Armstrongs lived at the same time (youngest daughter Sarah C born in AR in 1842).

what is it you are looking for?  Evidence that supports what James / John said or evidence that refutes it?
I am looking for their parents. They appear to have been in Texas in the mid to late 1830s, then in Arkansas by the mid 1840s, where they seem to have met their fates.

I have heard that in some instances in early America, if the man of the house dies, the kids are considered orphans even if the mother lives on. Not sure if this is the case here, but they are not with either parent by 1850.

Also, it's possible there are other orphaned Barretts in the Arkansas/Texas areas around the same time frame, base on their separation in ages.
