Hi, Ken, and welcome to WikiTree. I note the profile is basically unsourced and have tagged and categorized it as such. Caswell County, North Carolina was not formed until 1777 so if he was born there in 1770 it was not called that.
Robert McFarland, the Rev War soldier, did have a son Robert who claimed pension and other things that were not paid to his father. There are extensive documents at Ancestry from the pension records and while it appears these may be the same man as attached as the father of this profile the information given here is very different than what appears on the profile of McFarland-993. These documents state Robert McFarland, the elder, was born 15 Mar 1759 in Orange County, North Carolina, moved to Virginia about age eight, and first enlisted in November 1776 in the company of Capt Wm Russell. He moved from Washington County, Virginia to Jefferson County, Tennessee. Pension allowed 25 Aug 1832.
Robert McFarland Jr was in 1832 presiding justice of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Jefferson County, Tennessee. Correspondence in 1837 refers to the elder McFarland being deceased.
Either there are two men of the same name and both had sons Robert (entirely possible) or perhaps there is some conflation, or some of the information on the father profile (McFarland-993) is erroneous.
May I suggest you add the tags southern_colonies, virginia, tennessee, and north carolina to your question so some other eyes have a look at this.
