Great queston Daniel,
Tommy and Lauren have some good answers and to add to them, I'd ask where have you looked so far? In helping another member track her ancestor's WWII movements she was able to find his personnel records from the US Marine Corps that have been published by Ancestry. You may be able to find records at Fold 3, Ancestry, or elsewhere.
If you haven't done this yet, I recommend you write a letter to the Veterans Administration. Ask them to send you EVERYTHING they have on your servicemember. Because many of the personnel files were burned, a lot are missing. However, the VA has worked to link branch, unit, state, and regional records to fill in the gaps for the records that were destroyed in the fire.
Good luck in your search!
