Merging two sets of parents

Hi, I am new to WikiTree and need some advice.  I have an extensive GEDCOM file of my ancestors and relatives that I created some years ago and I'm trying to clean it up and integrate the people into WikiTree.  In the process, I'm trying to resolve some conflicting information:

I have a Peleg-Almy (Almy-465) that is obviously a duplicate of Peleg Almy (Almy-306) that I want to merge but the manager of Almy-306 has correctly pointed out that although the two Peleg Almy's are obviously the same, they have different parents.  So before I can merge the two Peleg Almy's, I think I need to straighten out the two sets of parents.

The mother of both Peleg Almy's is Catherine Slocum but there are two Catherine Slocum's (Slocum-1543 and Slocum-1025).  These two Catherine Slocum's are obviously the same person and could be merged but the problem is that each of these Catherine Slocum's is married to a different Job Almy (Almy-102 and Almy-274) and I'm not sure which Job Almy is the correct husband of Catherine Slocum.

What's the best way to go about resolving this?

Thanks for your help,

Chuck Cobb (Cobb-8107)

I haven't looked yet... but sounds like the two Job Almy profiles need to be merged also

Merging can take a while, as you have to either wait for manager approval, or 30 days for default approval... so be patient and buckle in for a possible long ride :)

Thanks, I think I have resolved this.

  • The two Catherine Slocum's were obvious duplicates and one of them had no profile manager so I took ownership of the orphan and merged the two of them
  • The merged Catherine Slocum (Slocum-1025) was now married to two different Job Almy's (Almy-102 and Almy-274).  I found a Rhode Island marriage record that convinced me that Almy-274 was correct and I removed her marriage to Almy-102
That should clear the way for merging the two Peleg Almy's that created this conundrum and I'm waiting for the other Peleg Almy profile manager to approve the merge.
Thanks,
Chuck Cobb
When you see one set of duplicates, it is a good idea to check ancestors and descendants for a couple of generations to see if there are more duplicates.  Usually there are duplicate families involving multiple generations and multiple children.
Yes, I have learned that to be correct.  It can be a mess to untangle.
