Finally finished scanning our Family Bible

I FINALLY finished scanning our family Bible (which was published in 1885 and has been in the family since at least 1887. I didn't scan the pages that had living people (yes, it's been maintained for over 100 years).

I set it up as a Free-Space profile and want to make sure I did it all correctly. Can someone take a peek?

Hi, Alicia -- To me, it looks like you have done a superb job in preserving your family's bible within a Free-Space Page!!  I might make one minor correction...it looks like you have mis-spelled "beer" when transcribing the Temperance Pledge.  It appears as "bear."
Bwahahaha! That's funny :) Thanks for letting me know. I fixed it. I appreciate you looking it over for me.

Thanks a lot Alicia. Among so many things I've learnt in this forum, I've learnt today what a family Bible was. Until today, would not have imagined such a cultural artefact could exist.

And to be clear, I had been raised in catholic religion (more or less), even if I've turned a dye-in agnostic since about half a century, I have a Bible in my personal library shelves, and I won't let anybody write anything on or in it. It's a read-only thing. But that comes from my father's education to respect all books in general. You read books, and you write on notebooks, you don't write on books.

Overseas, things are different. smiley

Usually, people pass it on to their children - or another family member interested in maintaining the family lines. There is no test of worthiness. We record what we know to the best of our ability.

As far as not writing in books - I agree, but this Bible actually has pages in it just for that purpose. Interspersed with the KJV text and hundreds of images are pages asking the owners to list the families' marriages, deaths, births, etc. I guess you could say it is meant to be partly notebook and partly Bible. In the back, someone (probably my 4th great-grandfather since the page is dated August 1887) wrote down a list of addresses.

When I was about 10, someone gave me one, but I have no idea what happened to it. And I haven't seen another one like it, but I know they used to be popular.

I knew of this one's existence, but never thought it would end up in my hands. My aunt left it to her daughter. When her daughter died, it ended up in an estate sale. The woman who bought the estate passed away and her granddaughter thought the book should be back with family and tracked me down on Ancestry.com.

I was astonished to see the family line going all the way from the late 1700's to having listed my mother and myself. It's been maintained for that long. And, as such, I was unable to share many of the pages in it so I don't violate the privacy of the still living.

I have no idea who I will leave it to. My sons aren't really interested in genealogy, and neither are my sister's children. However, she has a daughter who, while she doesn't have children of her own, cares a great deal about the family history. She may not care to maintain it, but at least I believe this Bible will be in good hands.
hmmm... I just realized what you wrote here is different than what came in my email. Then, I realized you edited your post.  There is no such thing as a stupid question. I'm an open book and happy to answer any question - even personal ones, usually.

"There is no such thing as a stupid question". Indeed that's I always told my students. smiley Only answers can be. But in this case, the questions I deleted were just showing I had not done the minimal homework of reading your page where the answers are written, crystal-clear.

Thanks anyway for the further details. It's really an amazing story.

What a beautiful Bible! This is such a family treasure. I am not an expert on Free-Space pages but, to me, this appears just beautiful. It is well organized and very well explained.

Thank you :) Other than a name study, it's only the second one I've done - and the other was so hard to follow that I wanted to try it this way instead. I'm just not sure it's the RIGHT way to do it! LOL But - I definitely appreciate the feedback.

Alicia, as I had said in the other post: so happy for you that you were able to recover this bible.  It is such a family treasure.  What a beautiful piece of art and your page is wonderful!  I'm so jealous; I wish our family had a bible like this.
