Brick wall with my maternal grandfather Richard Hale

Question

Any one have any info on a Richard Wilbert Hale b. 1871 or 1877 according to the 1930 & 1940 WI census. Richard my maternal grandfather was 20 some years older than my Gram she was born Vera Elizabeth HANNAH in Wilton MN in July 1903. Family folklore has Grandpa being from Joplin MO but the 2 census say WI & MN. I am unable to find a trace of him anywhere except for those 2 census. Other family folklore... that he was possibly in a street or bar fight where some one was killed so he had to change his name. Possibly.Hailey but again no solid info. I did get my maternal uncle to do the dna test at 23andme. Also was said that he fought for Canada in WW1 because the US wouldn't take him.. my mom's oldest brother was born in 1923 in Emo Canada. Just above MN. Not sure about how to get info or his birth certificate from there. Possibly had a sister Minnie or Tilly. My Gram was suppose to have been his 3rd wife and possibly a daughter named Helen and a son or daughter named Casey Thanks in advance Michelle

Thank you but I know that he was in WI in 1930 & 1940 census, as i stated in my initial query.  I just have nothing prior to that time period.. My oldest uncle was born in Emo canada, right above MN in 1923 but am unable to confirm it with any records.

So where was he in 1920 and before?  that is what i need to find out, I know he met my grandmother in Wilton/Bemidji MN

I laugh at all the false information that was given on the 1940 census with my grandma.  However if i didnt know any better i would be looking in all the wrong places with her... which is what concerns me with my grandfather, because i dont have any info about him & cant determine what is fiction & what is real.

Thank you for these. I was so excited when I found this same info years ago. But it's not the right one.. found where there are buried in VA or WV can't remember anymore. My grandfather Richard Hale is buried in Crandon WI. But the similarities are great..
