Immigrant William Buel of Windsor Conn is constantly being pushed into English origins, and now a Puritan because he settled Windsor. My records show he married Mary Post (not from Albert Welles, I trust) in Dorchester Mass in 1630 before later dwelling Windsor and Killingworth. At one time I located the fact that his "carpenter's sea chest" is in a museum at Ithaca NY.
As a boy I mistrusted Welles elaborate make believe in England, and now I feel that this couple are totally miscast. Willem Buel, born probably in the vicinity of a town NNE of Amsterdam, where there are records of dozens of other earlier Buels, became a seaman, and as such was turned down by a Reformed Dutch minister in the Dutch colonies when he wanted to marry Mary. Together they eloped to Dorchester Mass to get married, and they never went back. Willem was now a farmer or woodworker in Connecticut, and did not return to sea, fortunately for Mary. If this couple is Dutch origin, I am proud of this, and feel it should be publicized. Their true story is much more interesting than Welles portrayal of dull Englishmen who leave all their money to churches.
