Eliza Jane (Pettis) Wiltse was born about Feb’ 1836 in what appears to be New York (her father David’s obit mentions first son and daughter born in New York) not Minnesota (1850 census cited by the g2g) I need the link for this census. She was 17 years old at this time. She is the daughter of David William Pettis (See his OBITUARY; mentions a Sodias N.y. Which I can’t find but there is a Sodus, N.Y. Also mentions Wagner County N.Y. Which I can’t find?? Says he Bought his Freedom? Was he an indentured Servant learning the Trade??) and Sarah Ann Ellis. She married Abram Wiltse (need another marriage record/source cited) and she passed away December 5, 1915 in Minnesota.

Need some help adding sources

Need Burial info

Was her nickname “Nancy”?

It appears from record she divorced  or was divorcing; I thought in this era it was very uncommon? Also considering her fathers beliefs and principles this was a tragic event for her. She I believe ended up living with her daughter Mary Elizabeth (Wiltse) Nissen 1880 Census after this. Abram was a civil war veteran as well

New info seems to show Eliza Jane Pettis died in 1895 and this Nancy Ann Wilts per 1900 census was married to Abram Wiltse 4 years and Abram dies in 1901! So Nancy must of been a second wife to Abram!

Excellent Andrew. And I think the 'bought his freedom' is the article writer taking liberties with the language.
The 1870 census is interesting one shows her with family and the other in Iowa. The divorce granted 1881. Interesting.

Thank you got the info you sent. It helps shows she died in 1895 so more research on her death is needed.

I have census of a Nancy A. Wiltse was this Abram Wiltse second wife? If Eliza Jane passed in 1895 them who is Nancy?

Seems to be a lot going on with Abram Wiltse!

Yup in 1900 census Abram Wiltse and Nancy married 4 years!

I’m getting the idea now!

I was able to fix the census report and add “Nancy” as spouse to Abram! He apparently married a few times!
Eliza Jane and Abrahm were divorced in 1881 so that was the end of that marriage.  Then he married Nancy about 1886.  I'll see what else I can find.
Thank you

Trying to unravel this!

Also, Andrew, if you go back to Abraham's findagrave you will see another wife Sarah Shutter.  They must have divorced because she goes on to marry Price. If you click on her site you will see her three husbands.  Isn't this fun!! LOL

Only one mate per person. Would make genealogy easier.

:)
Yes I agree!

I have found both his other wives!

Added them
What a mess! LoL

Well a surprise!

This is a history of the Petty/Pettis family.  I don't know the accuracy of it.  Let me know if you cannot access this and I will try a different way to get it to you.
