Mary Ann (Wall) Woods - Why no mamma? (Wall 5806) London

+1 vote
My father in law (99) -(Woods 13205) has no recollection of his mother's mother in London, only a father Joseph Wall. I have been researching using Ancestry through the NZ  library and can find marriage certificate 1907 and death certificate 1975, but birth certificate eludes me. Name seems to have been fairly common. To find her parents where do you suggest I look next?

I think Mary Ann Wall's mother may have been Elizabeth Hill. Here is the trail that I followed so you can decide if you think that is correct (with free-to-view links to all the records):

Baptism record for Mary Ann Wall daughter of Joseph Wall and his wife Elizabeth in 1888 in Chelsea, London, showing her year of birth as 1886. She was baptised at the same time as her brother George Wall who was born in 1888 -

Not so sure about this one, but there is a birth registration for Mary Ann Wall in Gravesend, Kent in 1886 with a mother's maiden name of Hill -

WALL, MARY  ANN  Mother's Maiden Surname: HILL

The 1901 and 1911 censuses prove that the Gravesend one is correct. Her parents were indeed Joseph and Elizabeth from Somerset.

"England and Wales Census, 1901," database, FamilySearch ( : 21 May 2019), Mary Wall in household of Joseph Wall, East Ham, Essex, England, United Kingdom; from "1901 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast ( : n.d.); citing East Ham subdistrict, PRO RG 13, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey
