Membership Information Still Needs Work

+7 votes
Today I was contacted by a cousin who wants to help improve a profile.  As I was emailing her back, I thought I'd send her the membership information.  I went to the Help Index and instead of finding it under "M" for Membership, I found it under "H" as a subcategory of the Honor Code.  I thought that was a little wonky, so I opened a page in an incognito browser to see how hard it would be to figure out how to sign up from the home page.  I click on Get Started and it wants me to create an account.  That seemed a little overwhelming, especially since there is minimal information about Wikitree on that page.  And if I click on "get started" what sort of membership am I committing myself to?  For example, from that sign up page, there's no mention of the guest account, and it being easy to delete.

I told my newly found cousin that she could sign up for an account and add information, or she could just work through me.

It seems as though there is still a lot of room for improvement on all of these pages--the main Wikitree page, the membership page, and the index.

You are right it should be under M for membership. I go to my badges page and at the top click 'Badges and Points'. Then on the next page scroll down and click 'Member Types'. When I need to give someone the link.

Yes, it is a few short steps but when I need the link that is how I can find it. Membership this page explains the different types and has the link to register. It may be the same one you ended up finding.

I think the page How_to_Use_WikiTree (listed on the help menu as Intro to WikiTree) is conceptualized as the place that newcomers will go to find out about how to participate. (Of course, not everyone thinks alike, so not everyone will look at the page for information on membership.)

That page has a link to Help:Membership (the very same page that is linked as Member Types), a good place to send newcomers.

If you have suggestions for improving the ways people can find this content or for improving the content itself, I bet the Team would be interested in hearing them.
