Can we connect Whoopi Goldberg to the tree without going through one of her ex-husbands?

Hi GFRers!

Abby posted this in the G+ group, and I'm bringing the request over to G2G. For those of you participating in Note-vember, this counts for points ;)

"AJ has been making plans for an appearance on the View, and they made a request to see if we can get Whoopi connected without going through one of her exes. I have been working on it a bit, adding her mother's family and extending some, but am starting to go cross-eyed. If some of you want to take a look, it gets all sort of tangled when we get into post-CW Laurens County, Georgia. Lots of leads, though, so if you can sort it out (and if I made a mistake, please feel free to correct it) and see if we can hook her up that way, it would be awesome. I am going to go back through the lines a few more times to double check some work and see what more I can add. This will help with future Southern connections, too. The more family, the merrier!"

By the way, I've made this easier on us for now by disconnecting her marriage to David Claessen. If nobody adds other spouses or reconnects David, we'll be able to see Whoopi's connection in the 100 degrees of AJ calculator.

Thanks to Karen's work on the Sweet and Ellis lines, I was able to make a (long!) connection to Whoopi. I think it's too late to get picked up for the calculator tonight, but it should show by Friday.

The connecting point is Jeremiah Wilkinson, 23 steps from AJ.

From Jeremiah we have:

His brother, Benjamin Wilkinson
His daughter, Amey Wilkinson Staples
Her daughter, Cynthia Staples Jenks
Her husband, Levi Jenks
His sister, Sabra Jenks Follett
Her son, Leonard Follett
His son, George Follett
His wife, Clara Whittle Follett
Her brother, Peter Whittle
His son, James Whittle
His wife, Jessie Ellis Whittle
Her husband, Albert Sweet
His mother, Florence Sweet
Her father, Pardon Sweet
His sister, Almira Sweet Harry
Her son, Charles Harry
His wife, Josephine Hill Harry
Her mother, Amanda (Unknown) Hill
Her brother, Congo Laughlin
His son, Marion Laughlin
His wife, Ola Johnson Laughlin
Her brother, Robert Johnson, Sr.
His son, Robert Johnson
His daughter, Caryn Johnson - Whoopi Goldberg, 47 steps from AJ

Whoopi!

Happy dance!

I'll try to make some bio notes for the profiles I created.

I was actually hoping it would go through Pardon Sweet because I liked that he served in the US Colored Troops in the Civil War.

Some of the connections have been winding their way up into Rhode Island! This is especially interesting, because so far it looks like we're getting into mixed-race families before the Civil War.

One of these families is the Sweet family, and the descendants of Cato Sweet and his wife, Lucy. I'm working on their daughter Almira and her descendants. It would be great if someone wanted to branch out from one of their other children.

Here's another family to work out from: Charles Pinder of Maryland and his wife Charity need their children added.

I've been working on Cato's daughter Adeline.

Thanks, Karen!

Here's another point to work out from: Caesar Weeden of Griswold, Connecticut. Born circa 1795.

Another branch to go out from: George Brewster and his wife Olive Cross.

I will play with George for a bit. Thanks for working these, ladies! I need to step back for a bit. I had a hundred tabs open trying to go somewhere that looked promising and just couldn't see through the forest.

Her great grandfather born abt 1887 has a private father? James Harris

Ack. It was one of the auto-father creations when I added a sibling. Open now.

James Williams and his wife Betty Owens - born in Kentucky, moved to Indiana

Benjamin Johnson - born in Kentucky, moved to Indiana

Parker Sullivan - born in Mississippi, moved to Indiana

Here are some more Rhode Islanders (and others) to work out from:

Denard Hughes of Maryland, born around 1810.

William Henry Dimond born 1856 in New York, moved to Providence, Rhode Island.

Anthony Hickman, born about 1820 in Washington, DC. His children ended up in Rhode Island.

James Hickman and his wife Julia Clark. Born in the 1840s. Washington to Rhode Island.
