I am hoping to find documents confirming children of Zachariah Wells, b.abt 1745 in Philadelphia, PA?

Just to be clear,  this is not the same Zachariah Wells who lived in Big Stone Gap, Wise, Virginia. The father of this Zachariah Wells was Jacob Wells, b. 1722 Bucks Co. PA and d.1779-1780 in Loudoun Co. Virginia. This Zachariah Wells took a Revolutionary war pension in Sullivan Co. Tennessee 1825 and died between 1833-1839 in Whitley Co. Kentucky.

Thanks for your help & best regards, Doug

Good News,

Tax (Tithable) lists are so valuable to find, actually found a 1789 document confirming the son of this older Zachariah, matching our ancestor. This is awesome!!!

I found a pension document, showing his age of 89 in 1825, so his birth date was actually 1736 not 1745. There was some mixing up of this Zachariah Wells and another one in a different county 300 miles away who was born about 1745, so glad I have been able to correct these things.

Actually, after the reading the pension document I have more carefully, he was listed as 89 yrs of age in 1835, so he was most likely born abt 1746.

Doug.....

I am under the impression that the Zachariah from Big Stone Gap, was born there also.  He married Abigail E. Osborne and they had 12 Children. He also served in the Revolutionary War.    He then became the Patriarch of the Kentucky Wells Family.

I would like to compare notes since there seems to be a confusion between two different men with the same name.

I hope to hear from you.    Evelyn McKelvey (Murray-2307)

Looking at all of these comments it looks like we have:

1.  Zachariah Wells (1771-1836)  born in Effingham Co., Georgia, married Elizabeth Scott.

2.  Zachariah Wells (1739-1825)  born Eastern Virginia, married  Abigail E. Osborne in 1770.

3.  Zachariah Wells (-----1781) born Maryland.  A Tory, a quick trial and HUNG in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.

4.   Zachariah Wells (1745-1833)  Served with George Washington.

If anyone else in WIKITREE is puzzled by Zachariah Wells, please contact me so that we may compare notes.

I'm not sure if this suggestion would be helpful or not, but it might be worthwhile to check the federal census for Sullivan County and Whitley County in 1830? It could involve extensive searching, but sometimes the census documents provide a lot of information which assists genealogical research. By law, the census was supposed to be conducted every ten years and much of that data is now public.

Dorothy,

Thanks for your suggestion. I have ordered a microfilm for 1757-1799 tax/tithable lists for Loudoun Co, Virginia, hoping that will help. I have been given military/pension records also. I also have some court documents so I have a fairly good idea of his children at this point, but still no verification of his wife's name. Documents between 1765-1810 would be the most helpful.

Thanks again, I will check census records for all three locations.

Best regards, Doug
There are chancery records in Whitley Co that mention a law suit. Kristen Cart found them. One child was a daughter who married a Shipley back in Sul Co. Another daughter was Mary Wells who married John Jones (lived in Sul Co). A few others (sons).
Thanks very much. I did look at those census records that you mention. Actually, this Zachariah Wells father was Jacob Wells, b.1722, and his brother was Samuel Wells, b. 1720, and since I posted this question, I have confirmed that my  ancestor was Samuel not Jacob, and Samuel's son was Henry Wells, b. before 1750 and his son was also named Zachariah Wells, b. between 1771-1780 Effingham Co. Georgia and d. 1836 Bryan Co. Georgia.

DOUG.....

What proof do you have that your Zachariah Wells collected a Pension in Sullivan, Tennessee?  Did he serve in the Virginia Line?  What is the name of the son of the elder Zachariah?  Also, you claim to have all of this information however, you are not sharing any of it for comparison.

Kristen Cart is a direct ancestor of the Zachariah Wells, RS 1745-1836(Whitley Co. KY) and she found the probate documents in Whitely Co. Ky regarding Zachariah Wells, RS. She has posted her document info online.

Best regards, Doug
