Henry James Garland first appears in the 1841 census as a 15 year old Bakers Assistant in the family of James Nethercoat in North Street, Malden, Essex. At the time his name is recorded as Henry Garland. James Nethercoat had 6 daughters and no sons so he may well have treated Henry very much as his own son. It is possible that in return Henry adopted the middle name James from his employer.

In the 1851 census we find him living in Goldhanger, Essex, with his first wife Anna, who was born in Tollesbury, Essex. They have a one week old infant daughter who as yet is unnamed. Interestingly they also have a Nurse, Emma Leavitt, who is 25 years old and was alo born in Tollesbury. It is possible That Emma is Anna's older sister and since Emma is unmarried this would give a possible surname for Anna. You may wish to investigate this further. Anna could be buried in Goldhanger or Tollesbury and burial record may give parents names for confirmation of this surname.

I failed to find Henry in the 1861 census but in 1871 he pops up again in Newland Street, Withham, Essex. He is now married to Ellen who is aged 34, and was born in Witham. His eldest daughter is Alice Mary and this is clearly the infant from his first marriage since she is aged 20. At this time he has three children by Ellen. They are a daughter, Emily Sarah, aged 7; a daughter, Edith Elizabeth, aged 5; a son, Charles Henry James, aged 4; and another son, Frank Lewis (from his mothers surname), aged 1. All of Ellen's children are born in Witham. Alice Mary was born in Goldhanger, Essex.

It's worth noting that Maldon, Highbridge, Goldhanger, and Tollesbury are all sited very close togeather and as a baker Henry never needed to move very far for suitable work or his business.

In 1881 there is now a daughter, Bertha, aged 9; a son, Percy, aged 8; and another son, Claude, aged 5. They are now living at 127, Ifield Road, Kensington, so it looks as if Henry has moved his business up-market.

In 1891 Henry has retired and Frank is now the head of the household. Frank is now a grocers assistant as is Percy. Alice is working as a dressmaker. claude is a Hardware Merchant's Clerk. They are living at 71, Brookville Road, Fulham.

If you want to take this further suggest you search 1901 and 1911 census using Frank Garland's name as he is probably still recorded as head of household.

Thanks Kevin for additional info.

Looks like Claude is married to Edith and they have a son, Richard.

Frank is no longer living with father so he probably married and set up home somewhere nearby unless he has changed his employment.

Hi John,

I couldn't find anything closely resembling Frank in the 1901 Census so I looked at the Death recs on FreeBMD.  I think he's there (Frank Lewis) having died in Fulham aged 25 in the Sep qtr 1893.

As Edith gave birth to Richard G. in Fulham, it is possible Frank was with his brother Claude when he died.

Kind regards,

Kevin
