Someone named "Virginia Fagan" has information on this JONES family. She lists J. NEWT and CLEMMIE as the parents of your JAMES ENOCH JONES.
An interesting document that she has is a copy of the marrige license of JAMES E JONES and MARY CRUNK.
Included on this document is an affadavit, signed by J E JONES, which reads, "I, J E JONES, do solemly swear that my mother is dead and that I do not know the whereabouts of my father and have not for several years, and that I have no guardian. MISS MARY CRUNK has arrived at the age of 18 years." (Signed) J E JONES
I spent a long time trying to find JAMES E JONES on the 1900 Sevier Co., Arkansas Census, since he states on the marrige license that he resides in Horatio, Sevier County.
I was unable to find him on the 1900 Census - I tried every "trick in the book" with no success.
No definite proof that his parents are NEWT and CLEMMIE JONES. May I suggest obtaining a copy of his death certificate, since you know the exact death date (March 23, 1941 in Murray, Oklahoma)? His parents' names might be on it.
I did find a J NEWTON JONES and his wife, CLEMMIE, on the 1910 Early Co., Georgia Census - they state they have been married 21 years - meaning they married about 1889 - about 5 years after JAMES ENOCH was born.
It is interesting to find that MARY CRUNK's mother, SARAH GRIMES, was born in Alabama, as was JAMES ENOCH SMITH.
Sometimes, in our family research, we hit "brick walls" - the good news is that these "brick walls" may crumble in the future!
