This is another stepfamily connection of mine. A man named Eliphalet Roan married Mary "Polly" Gibson in 1824 Claiborne county, Mississippi. He's still living there as of the 1834 tax list, then in 1837 she remarries to Richard Ward Hudson (my 3x-great-grandfather) and has more children.
I do find a Caroline Roan in 1850 Claiborne county, born about 1831, who I think might be a daughter of Eliphalet and Mary. She's living with a family of Iveys. In 1851 Caroline marries a Thomas Nivill and I can't find her after that.
Back to Eliphalet. His name is so unusual I at first assumed he was the only man by this name in all of the 19th century USA. I'm not certain, however. There was a War of 1812 veteran by this same name who served in the 13th Regiment, KY militia. This is probably the same man who appears in Madison co. KY in the 1810 census. A marriage is recorded in 1807 in Jessamine co. KY for him to Nancy Allison Wilson.
Then in 1820, a man by the name of Eliphalet Roan is found in Floyd co. Indiana. In the 1850-60 censuses of this same place I found a Nancy Roane, age 69, living with what seems to be her daughter and son-in-law's family, including a grandson named Eliphalet Pennington. This would appear to be the same Nancy who married Eliphalet Roan in Jessamine co. KY. This is further proven as I found an 1853 land patent on BLM GLO's site showing that "Nancy Roan widow of Eliphalet Roan private in Captain Lewis' Company KY Infantry, War of 1812" had land via military warrant in Floyd co. Indiana.
Now, was the Eliphalet who was in Mississippi between 1824 and 1834 a different man (a son?) of the War of 1812 veteran, or was there one Eliphalet Roan who had families in two different places?
