Greetings WikiTreer's! Today we are pleased to announce the relaunch of the One Name Studies Project!

A One Name Study (ONS) is defined as a project which researches all occurrences of a surname, rather than a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple).

One of the foundations of WikiTree is our commitment to collaboration, so during this relaunch, we have expanded and clarified the guidelines for all ONS projects to ensure that each project serves as a collaborative platform that focuses on researching all occurrences of an individual surname across the globe.

From here, individual team studies and research pages can then be used to branch out into specific methods or areas of interest; such as geographically (SURNAME's of England), by time period (SURNAME's of the 18th Century), or by topic (e.g., SURNAME DNA, SURNAME Occupations, or SURNAME Statistics/Facts).

Are you ready to get started with a One Name Study? There are many ways to join!

1. You can join an existing Name Study;
2. You can adopt a Name Study that needs an ONS Coordinator; or
3. You can start a new Name Study by emailing the ONS Project Leaders!

Requirements: 

To coordinate a study: 90 days membership at WikiTree and at least 1,000 contributions. There is a limit of 3 studies per coordinator.

To participate in a study: Everyone is welcome to participate.

i am looking to do a one name study in the Kibble surname. The surname is my grandmothers maiden name and I would like to put together information on the surname to help others and further investigation into my own family tree. So would like to be considered to form a study and help from Wiki would be appreciated. I have been doing family history for 25+ years and I have a Genealogy diploma from Centre of Excellence

Hi guys, you helped me set up my Kirkland ONS last year, but you never awarded me a project badge.  I am the coordinator and we have three separate sub-categories (descendants of Richard Kirkland, Southern Colonies, and Scotland) totaling over 800 profiles at present.  May I please join the ONS project?

Because of this post, I reached out to the manager of the Hildreth One Name Study today and he immediately added me to that study. I was stunned at how quickly he responded. He already has a wonderful resource set up. I don't yet know exactly how to participate, but I'm willing to learn.

One suggestion--can this thread be pinned to the top of G2G for a while so more people have a chance to see it? I'd suggest at least through the weekend. There are so many good participation threads like this that scroll away so fast that many people do not get a chance to see them.

Usually only big announcements and proposals get pinned Nelda. That's great news about the Hildreth Study and I hope you discover ways to participate. What we encourage is to chose a specific thing to add, such as a certain family line, or a region. Then link your page(s) to the main study page via category and sticker.

I've set up a BONITZ ONS already in 2016.

But I am not sure if my pages are in line with the latest guidelines. Would be interested in getting a name study coordinator badge.

I also added a sticker to many profiles that are connected to my study. Is there a way to use my own graphic in this sticker?

It appears you already have the ONS Coordinator badge. What we did was change the "member" badge to a new display, so you are all setup here.

I looked over the Bonitz page, and it looks OK to me as the information is very high level. If you start researching specific areas, then we suggest splitting that information out into separate pages. You can find more information here: Getting Started with a One Name Study.

I have an Algeo One-Name Study on the Guild of One Name Studies site.  I haven’t done much with it, perhaps because I am having trouble understanding and working with the program I thought I would use to put trees up.  (TNG). Also, there are a heck of a lot more Algeos and variations of the name than I had thought.  I don’t think I’d relinquish my surname study on ONS site, but might be interested in one here as well.  I

Three is the limit, Ros. Some folks have more, but they have been in place for some time, so we are allowing them to remain as coordinator of those studies.

I am the coordinator of the Christopher name study. I set some things up, and have invited some people, but haven't had much luck getting things off the ground.

I am currently doing a lot of work on Cassidy, Coat and Britton Name studies.  I have a ONS co-ordinator badge from 2014 but I'm not sure I am down as a co-ordinator for these 3 surnames?  I have had involvement in some other surnames but for these 3 surnames I also manage companion DNA projects at FTDNA so am keen to continue with them.
