Template-generated categories not working on sandbox pages?

I'm trying to test project templates and stickers on my sandbox page. I can get a standard Category: phrase to work, but the template with "needs=" after the vertical bar in the template isn't working.

Sandboxes are normal freespace pages. Why isn't the category being placed?

Template:US Southern Colonist Sticker does not have any parameters, as Nat mentioned. These are included by Project Boxes by default, but not stickers.

Project Boxes and Research Note Boxes are not meant to be used on space pages, and categories have been specifically excluded from showing on any page other than a person profile.

These are not errors or bugs.

"Project Boxes and Research Note Boxes are not meant to be used on space pages, and categories have been specifically excluded from showing on any page other than a person profile."

This is what I was looking for. Thank you.

I have never seen this documented anywhere. I just checked both project boxes and research boxes help pages and this information is not on either.

While I understand why such templates should not be used on space pages, I'm stunned that we cannot or should not add categories to space pages. While the categories embedded into project / research templates may be ignored by the system when these boxes/stickers are placed on freespace pages, manual placement of [[Category:Category Name]] works just fine on such pages; projects I'm involved with use categories all the time on freespace pages. I see nothing on the categorization help page that says categories cannot be used on space pages. Categorization of project-related space pages is one of the most useful applications of categories in my work here. And there are thousands of source space pages that use categories. Cemetery pages, too. I really hope that part of your statement is inaccurate.

That is correct, neither are documented in this manner, but I can verify by the code that is how they operate. These are also restricted templates that only the Team can modify since they affect hundreds of templates and many thousands of profiles.

I see nothing on the categorization help page that says categories cannot be used on space pages.

I'm sorry if I gave this impression, but this not what I meant at all so let me try and restate it:

"Project Boxes and Research Note Boxes were not intended to be used on space pages, so the categorization that those templates provide have been excluded from showing on any page other than a person profile."

In short, you can use [[Category:]] links on space pages all you want, I just mean the specific templates mentioned will just not add the categories automatically to space pages.

That was done with intent to allow using the template as visual example on space page or template documentation,.. without actually categorizing that page in a category.
Thanks for the clarification, Steven and Aleš.

It's not working on the PGM template either and that one does have parameters.
I also tried it with the US so Col project box. No categories.
I tried a regular Unsourced with a state after it and it didn't generate a category either.  Maybe the category process is not working properly on Space pages. I would add bugs or sysops as tags.
Thanks for the additional test, Linda.
