What is the origin and meaning of the idiom 'when pigs fly'? - Quora  “When pigs fly” is used to describe an impossible thing, something that will never happen. It's often used humorously or sarcastically, especially as a comment on extreme ambition or deluded self-assurance. Similar: when hell freezes over. The general consensus is that the term originated either in Germany or Scotland.

> "The saying has been traced back to 'Proverbs of Scotland' (1862). The Walrus in 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865) by Lewis Carroll questioned 'whether pigs had wings.' First attested in the United States in 'Green Thicket World' (1934) by H. Vines.

>Lewis Carroll - Wikipedia Lewis Carroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (born January 27, 1832, Daresbury, Cheshire, England—died January 14, 1898, Guildford, Surrey),

Thanks Susan......We're just getting started......do we need to round up extra help? The person on WikiTree, that I would like to point out ,can be found in a basket on the above titled Wikipedia site and in turn has his own site. While we're at it can we top it off with a "5 Star Notables" entry on WikiTree?   Mad Jack
Just got from back from visiting  Lewis Carroll.....that's a good one Susan......never used have the time to stay long when I visited him before......was he the one who said "Listen to what the doorknob had to say"?   Jack

"Listen to what the dormouse said..."  And the chorus replies "Feed your head..."

Well, being in my early 20s when the song was new, AND a Louis Carroll fan, I got out my well-read copy of ''Alice in Wonderland'' (named shortened intentionally) and dived into my own rabbit hole. The dormouse said NOTHING. Not a word. Silent on the whole matter..cheeky

Jim , You caught my attention......I used to listen to the sound of a song, not the words......now, I am amused at the words I was overlooking......maybe I'm ready to read "Alice in Wonderland".   Jack
When I run across them, I love to read lists of "misheard lyrics" to popular songs.
That's a good one.....just googled some......also, wayback when Creedence Clearwater came out with "There's a Bad Moon on the Rise".......I took it as "There's a Bedroom on the Right".
