Looking for military records of David Hacker - US Civil War

Question

I'm working on the biography of David Hacker-984, and it's hard to find documentary sources on him - as opposed to the anecdotal sources all over the internet, like FindAGrave, https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/39089591

Specifically, I'd like actual evidence that the David Hacker born in 1797 in Virginia is the same David Hacker who enlisted in the US Army in 1862 Compnay I, 37th Iowa Infantry. I can't find much in the way of military records that might give his birth date. I can't find him in the 1860 Census in Iowa. His wife died in 1855 so she wouldn't be listed.

Married Katherine Gile 20 May 1824

She died 15 Sept 1855 in Boone County Indiana

I have no idea if or when David Hacker moved to Iowa.

Sometimes pension files or discharge papers will have information like this. They sometimes also have a physical description of the person which can help. You might also look for old newspaper accounts.

Alas, he has no pension papers as he died with no one to claim a pension.

A memoir written by his nephew confirms that this David Hacker did enlist in the Iowa regiment.

Ancestry has the best sources for him, but nothing to connect his military service with his earlier history.  The gravestone is shown, but only the death date.

War ended.In 1864 became West Virginia.
