Jacob Friedrich Steiger b. 1820 Germany d.7Feb1873 in Haltingen, Loerrach, Baden, Germany with 13 children, but father's name on none of the birth records; wife's name was Anna Katharina Steiger.

There is just a very general mention of the source, which makes it impossible to find it/have a look. Can you please provide the APA style source? Type of record, location, date, entry number, preferably online link?

My first guess: she was a busy lady getting pregnant unintentionally. Or this could be a paperwise birth record out of goodness.

I have found the birth record for Jacob Friedrich Steigert (had the "t" at the end of his name at birth) in Haltingen at archion.de (pay site for German church records), and have uploaded an image to Jacob's profile. Jacob Friedrich was an illegitimate child, and the mother did not name the child's father.

The entry reads (in translation): "On 6 February [1820] at 9:30 p.m. was born, and on 10 February baptised, an illegitimate boy Jacob Friedrich. The mother is Anna Katharina Steigert, the unmarried daughter of the late Michael Steigert, burgher here [in Haltingen]. Witnesses [to the baptism] are Michael Steigert, burgher here; Jacob Friedrich Walliser, unmarried son of the late Andreas Walliser, burgher here; Barbara Steigert, unmarried seamstress here; and Anna Katharina Kaufmann, the unmarried daughter of Johannes Kaufmann, shoemaker here. Recorded in Haltingen 10 February 1820 by T. Kaufmann, minister."

I have also added the marriage record from archion.de. The entry reads (in translation): "Haltingen, 21 March 1844 at 11 a.m. were married in the church Jacob Friedrich Steiger, a burgher-to-be and shoemaker here, illegitimate son of Anna Katharina Steiger of here, and Katharina Barbara Güthle, legitimate daughter of the late burgher here Friedrich Güthle and the late Anna Maria Ekkenstein from . . . [can't decipher the name of the town]. Witnesses: 1. Michael Steiger, burgher and farmer [literally "land-man"] here; 2. Johann Sebastian Kaufmann, burgher and farmer here. Banns February 29, 1844. [Recorded] Haltingen, 21 March 1844, T. Hertz [??], Minister"
