Finding newer birth certificates?

Hi there,

I'm trying to locate information on my husband's grandfather.

Long story short, his mother was raised by a man who it turns out was not her father. All of the relatives who could give us accurate information have passed, so we just have a name to work from.

I'd like to try to find her birth certificate to see if the mystery man's information is there. She was born in 1945 in Marion County, Indiana.

Is there a database that would have her birth certificate?

Any help is appreciated!

Indiana doesn’t release birth certificates to the public for 75 years so hers isn’t available on line yet.  Your husband could probably order a copy from the state as her child.  

However, Ancestry has a listing for her for a delayed birth ceritificate in VIrginia, so it looks like that's actually where she was born:

Birth Place:	Lee, Virginia, USA
Certificate Number:	1945003214

Maybe her step-father adopted her and a new certificate was issued.  Unfortunately Virginia has not opened records of adoptees without a court order.

Oh wow, thank you so much for doing this! I can tell my FIL and husband about this information! I wonder how difficult it is to get a court order.

I would contact the Virginia Department of Health/ Vital Records Office and see if there’s any way to know if this was a certificate created at an adoption or if the birth simply wasn’t registered until then.  You can order a copy of the certificate for just $12, that might be the best you can do.  https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/vital-records/applications-for-a-vital-record/
