Is there a Van Voorhees expert in the house?

I'm working on sourcing and completing my Van Voorhees/Voorhies line and I wanted to make a connection with someone who may have expertise in this family. I have ordered the "Through a Dutch Door" book which chronicles the origins of the family.

This is my closest Voorhies relative, Rebecca Ann.

I know the names of the entire line from research that my cousin did, I would just like to learn how to provide source information when the census and marriage records aren't readily available.

For your Colonial New Jersey ancestors, use the free online

* Abstracts of wills

* Early land records index

You will probably want to use the Dutch Reformed Church records, but I am not as familiar with those.

Many sources for this period are print only and still in copyright. The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey is a source many are not aware of, but is usually the first place I look. Unfortunately the State Library is closed, but I can do lookups when it reopens.

Sources-New Jersey links the sources above and a few hundred other sources and books; myself and others add to it continually.

Although I am certainly not an expert on this family, I too have a brickwall with that name, that is [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Voorheis-55 Mary (Voorheis) Petty]

One place to start is to track down the following source:

Genealogy of the Van Voorhees Family in America, by Elias W. Van Voorhis: New York 1888 Knickerbocker Press

Last time I checked, I could not find a version online, but if you do locate this book, I'd be happy to work with you.

Van Voorhees is my line as well. The book mentioned is available at archive.org or alternatively you may email me and I will copy the link over to you, as it wouldn’t add here.

With New Netherland families such as this one, we are continually challenged by the diversity of name variations. There are many reasons for this, but regardless of the reason, it means that we should not assume that there is any particular significance to details like the spelling of a name, and it also means that duplicate profiles crop up rather often.

Your earliest identified Van Voorhees ancestor is in WikiTree as https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jansz-231 -- Jansz is the patronymic name that was his last name at birth. I am proposing a merge of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_Voorhees-265 into Jansz-231. You will find that other members have been doing a lot of research on this family. smiley

You are awesome. I approved the merge! heart

Merge is done, but because the Voorheeses are numerous and confusing, it is likely that at least some of the genealogy of the family is wrong.

The 1984 book The Van Voorhees Family is likely to be valuable for you. It is temporarily available for online viewing at the Internet Archive.
