Brickwall on Great Grandfather Slade

I have been unable to find the birth of the above and therefore move back on his family. I 1st picked up William Slade when he married my Gt Grandmother in 1880 in Brentford she was originally from Gimingham in Norfolk. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Glister, however on marriage cert it is ‘Lister’! I have 1881, census, 1891, 1901, 1911, and his death in 1924 in Norwich. Williams middle name appears as ‘Edward’ but James has also been used. He remarried in1896 after Mary died, his 4 children were quite young at the time. His 2nd wife was Ellen Rose from Kensal Green London. On all but the 1911 census which Ellen fills in,  it gives his birthplace as ‘Cardiff’ she leaves this blank! I believe I might also have found him on a 1871 census living in Sunninghill Berkshire listed as a ‘visitor’ birthplace simply ‘Wales’. No 1861 census despite lengthy search. The only possible birth, I sent for the certificate but middle name John & this William can be followed thru as staying in Wales!

On both his marriage certs it gives his fathers name as JamesSlade a blacksmith. I cannot whatever I have tried find anything or anyone where this ties together. I have a theory that links hi to the family he was staying with in 1871 but no proof! Can anyone help or suggest anything I might have missed? I have done my own dna but this has been unhelpful on the ‘Slade’ line.

Hi Susan!  Welcome to WikiTree!  You've done a lot of work already!  I'm especially impressed that you followed the other William long enough to know that he wasn't your guy!

I'd be happy to help.  I was looking around to see if you had already started a profile for these folks.  I couldn't find any.  The easiest process for this collabourative work is if you start a profile and link to it in your question.  If you include all the sources you have already found, then we won't waste time re-finding those....also, if you link the profile to this question, then this discussion will always be available for anyone who peruses the profile.

I'd also suggest that you tag your question with the geographical locations.  That will get the attention of some experts in those areas.

Cheers

Shirlea
Yes this was my gt grandparents youngest son,I have this recordand fortunate enough to have Arthur Ernests war medal. My dad was named after him! Sue
Super!  Do you want to start some profiles as a place to store sources?

It might be that what Loretta was thinking about when she brought up my name is the Slade Name Study, which is about trying to add as many Slades to WikiTree as possible, and then see whether we can connect them all together or not. Some of the resources listed there might help you in your research. You might start with the Slade Genealogy site to see if your family is listed there. (If it's not, Jim would love it if you send him a GEDCOM so he can add them.)

I would like to second Shirlea's suggestion that you start building out your tree here as well. Because Ancestry is behind a paywall, many people (including me) can't see what's there, so we can't offer much help. Your next step, as I understand it, would be to sign the Honor Code, and once you've done that, you should be able to add and edit profiles besides your own.

Besides the sources on Ancestry, if you haven't already checked out FreeBMD, FreeCEN, and FreeREG, I recommend checking them out. They may have records that Ancestry doesn't. If you're willing to give them your birthdate (which I am not), FamilySearch also has a bunch of records. If you have the budget for it, the most useful of the pay sites that I have tried is Findmypast. In one free weekend, I managed to push almost all of my family lines back at least one generation. (Although since all my lines go back to the British Isles eventually, that probably shouldn't be a surprise.) There is also a site called RootsChat which doesn't have any trees or sources, but is more like G2G without the rest of WikiTree. But it's inhabited by a number of people who are absolute wizards at finding sources (at least within the UK). When I'm stumped, those are my go-to people.

Welcome Susan. Glad you are here!

I know we have a very active Slade guy on Wikitree.  You could private message him in case your family is connected, or even if a different Slade he might have come across helpful information in his Slade genealogy travels.  It's Greg Slade, he has helped me out before.  Greg Slade on Wikitree. .
