Connectors Challenge August 2020

Hello Connectors!

Good news! The Connectors Challenge will now begin on the FIRST of the month in line with some of the other challenges at WikiTree. This challenge is open to everyone. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

Bragging rights for the last challenge (July/August 2020) go to Jayme Arrington! She made 28 verifiable connections!

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation and connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect.

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the recently completed Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Coming Soon (we are still working out the kinks) - Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! The person who makes the most connections each month will get a Top Connector template for their profile. Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page. Current standings are in the tracker (link to follow).

I'll try my hand this month as well. Is there a bigger list of unconnected profiles in addition to my own?

Mariah -

Here is the list of all unconnected open profiles (heh heh heh). You can manipulate the list by sorting it. Some choice are alphabetical or most connections on top.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Unconnected&order=&viewAll=1&privacy=0

Another way I like to find profiles to connect (off my watchlist) is to just go to the Surname Page of one of my favorite surnames, like Smith (heh heh heh). Then you can choose Unconnected from the quick links at the top.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Unconnected&order=dateup&viewAll=1&s=SMITH

You can also go to your favorite project page and see if they have any unconnected profiles (they all do).

I would like to continue connecting people it’s a great challenge.
I wasn't sure where to add the connection comment or use the tracker- do I use it for an already existed profile I add a relationship to, or use the tracker on a new profile I add to the already existing profile? I do add "connected to (Wikitree ID) as a comment  Since I've often been working on branches that are in-laws of in-laws the profiles I started with are often ones that I created myself. To keep track I made a list on a free-space- https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Connections_Made_to_Existing_Profiles. Anyway, I'm poking around looking for more folks to connect for this month & will start once I figure how to track this correctly!

Hi. Tortoise here (versus Hare).  I'd like to continue in this monthly effort; wasn't sure if I needed to answer this month's announcement or I could get right down to it...so I'm playing it safe and doing both.  :-)  Thank you for your leadership and guidance. Making connections is very interesting work.

Willing to give it a try. (mind you I have been waiting for 2 months now to connect a cousin's profile I created before I found out I was not on the trusted list for my great Aunt's profile.Message sent some time back but still no reply - so he remains not connected *sigh*)

I am proud to report that I have connected a large island of Unconnecteds that got added to my watchlist a while back when I merged an orphan profile. Martha Gorr Lambert and her relatives are now connected to the tree via her mother Leanna Christ and some earlier generations of Christs (in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania), connecting to the connected profile for George Christ and his wife Catharina Andress, Martha’s great-great grandparents.

Please count me in for the monthly challenge.

The Connectors Challenge results tracker is once again FALSE, because someone is creating NEW prfoiles which do not count for this challenge ...

https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/connectorschallenge/20200801/User.htm

For those of us who follow the rules, it is discouraging to see false leaders  :(

Shouldn't this be monitored early on to catch these mistakes, so the false numbers do not continue to add up during the whole month ?

I'm in! It seems that folks are using the challenge tracker differently than I am - I only make one tracker comment for each branch connected.
by Karen Lowe G2G6 Pilot (205k points)
You are doing it the CORRECT way !

It is unfortunate that some wikitree members are using the connectors challenge tracker incorrectly ... and discouraging to us who are following the rules :(

I think I may have something to count for the connector's challenge, even though it's more or less accidently that I ran into it.

I connected Von_Zieten-2 and his parents, who were flying around as a little island via his daughter-in-law Zur_Lippe-Biesterfeld-2, her first husband Biron_von_Kurland-3, his sister Biron_von_Kurland-1 and her husband Von_Hohenthal-14, who is connected to his grandfather Von_Hohenthal-8. His mother Von_Haeseler-9 is the sister of Haeseler-19, who was created on 21 Aug and connected to the Big Tree the next day.
