Looking for Andrew Hacker in the Northern Neck of Virginia, 1763

The records of Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants (vol II Book M, M-217) list 430 acres to Andrew Hacker on 8 December 1763. He apparently still owned this land in 1778.

I'd like to know who he was, where he came from, where he went.

If libraries and Family History centers ever reopen, many abstracts of court, land, and probate records for Frederick County are available.  You might look for histories of Winchester, Virginia also.  And just an FYI, although his land grant was from the Northern Neck proprietary it wasn’t what’s called the Northern Neck, several counties in eastern Virginia between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, near the Chesapeake Bay.    Except for that land grant he won’t be found in Northern Neck records.   Frederick County was created from Orange in 1742.
His grant was on a "Crooked Run" and "West Run" - there seem to be several rivers and creeks with these names

Yes, and names may well have changed since then.  You can see the actual land documents at http://image.lva.virginia.gov/LONN/NN-1/218/0565_0567.pdf, also Frederick was divided several times so he may have lived in two or three different counties without ever moving anywhere.

Oh, that is wonderful!  So many thanks.

I wonder if there's a way to tell if he was a resident or an absentee owner.

He was on a rent roll in 1763 so that would suggest he was actually living there.  Lord Fairfax and the other proprietors wanted the land settled and 400 acresmay seem like a lot but back then it wasn’t a large landholding.  It’s likely that most of it wasn’t actually usable for farming.

Ancestry has a citation of the rent roll, but no way to actually see it.

Lots of early German families in the area at this time:

The name appears a few generations later in Indiana: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hacker-435

This would have been an English Hacker, I believe. I think. The name Andrew suggests it.

But it depends on when/if he immigrated, which I can't find. Theories, not evidence.
