DAR Ancestor gives Solomon born circa 1753, in New Jersey, died after April 29, 1829, married Hannah Tate.

How do I merge William Tharp-1073 and Tharp-295, who is the son of Solomon and Hannah Tate, without merging the father, first?

Profile manager has rejected the merge of the two father:

On 1 Aug 2020 Janne (Shoults) Gorman wrote on Tharp-198:

[[Tharp-293]] and Tharp-198 appear to represent the same person because: DAR Records are under Solomon Thorp Ancestor #: A114937. DAR disclaimer states, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling." DAR records also give his son as William Tharp, who married Mary Bishop Eply as his fourth wife. Decendants National Numbers are: 525111and 564882 The father's records require merging prior to merging of William ... or detach William from one of the two profiles.

Detaching William from one of the father’s might cause more complications.

Someone with familiarity of USA profiles and DAR applications would be best to guide both of you to the appropriate resolution.

Perhaps you could add USA and DAR tags to your question.

Thank you, Marion.  You are right, it will not do to detach him from the father that is married to his mother, and I don't think that the profile manager for Tharp-198 would appreciate me moving his mother to be his father's spouse.  Mom is actually connected to the original dad.  The thing is, the two dads represent the same person.
