Scotland Project assistance with my Samuel Nichols-2356

My ancestor, Rev. Samuel Nichols, was born in Scotland in 1786, but I haven't been able to find any records of his birth or his parents' names. He left for Liverpool as a young man and fought against Napoleon in the war in France in 1812. Came to America in 1832. Records of his son, James, mentions the Isle of Man, but nothing was found of the family there, either!
