I just checked my suggestions and there are a ton of new 896 Unknown parameter in template Help.  When I checked on the Help Box, the page had been removed.  Please advise how to correct this new error.  Thanks in advance.

All the best,

Can you give an example profile for this error?
Janet, is it a military sticker?

I believe the problem is with the military stickers.

I edited the first to include an example profile.

"using Unknown parameter: country

{{Roll of Honor

|category=Killed in Act..."

Here's another:

Spivey-912

Okay.  Well what about this one?

Spivey-1038

using Unknown parameter: caption
{{The Great War|branch=United States Arm...

I removed The Great War and it's all messed up, now.  How do I resolve this suggestion?

Thanks so much!  I really do appreciate all of you for helping me better understand how to correct my profiles.

In gratitude,

Janet

I just got a bunch of these on a newly-adopted profile - Kennedy-946. I would appreciate any help you all can offer...I am completely lost, even with reading the comments nearby. Thank you in advance.

I had a hard time with these, too.  So, I had the "parameters" of "country" or "caption" causing problems.  Parameter is just a term for part of the code.  It includes the | (perpendicular line "shift+\ on the keyboard, not a capital I"), a word, =, and another word.

In the edit screen, look at the military or roll of honor sticker code.  Find the parameter causing trouble ( |country= . . . . ) or ( |caption= . . . ) and delete it.  Bring the closing brackets "}}" up to the end of the flag or image code.

Here's and example:

-

{{World War II|branch=United States Army|startdate=1943|units=Army|enddate=1946|unit=|image=Photos-188.gif

+

{{World War II|branch=United States Army|startdate=1943|units=Army|enddate=1946|unit=|image=Photos-188.gif}}

-

|caption=United States of America}}

{{World War II|branch=United States Army|startdate=1943
|units=Army|enddate=1946|unit=|image=Photos-188.gif}}

 Hope this is helpful.

All the best,

Janet

I'm not clear how much I'm supposed to delete....sorry

That's okay, Pam.  Just delete:

|caption=United States of America (or whatever follows |caption=) and leave the closing brackets }}.

OR

|country=United States of America (or whatever country follows |country=) and leave the closing brackets }}.

|caption=United States of America

I can't copy and paste here - would you be willing to email me at qcreekpam616@gmail.com to work with me on this - there are four of them and I don't want to delete anything that I shouldn't ...if I can show you what it looks like and clarify what it should look like....I'll be more willing to "delete"Thank you.

Janet, initially, you removed the word "The Great War'.  That was the template name, not the 'caption' which is what the template Suggestion stated.  Parameter Caption is the parameter that was 'deprecated'.  I fixed the template, so if you go into the Changes Log on Spivey-1038, you can see what I changed.

My recommendation is:

  1. Look at the Info box on the Suggestion because it will usually tell you the 'parameter' that is causing the problem. (this is true on all Suggestions)
  2. Go to the Template page and review the 'parameters' list at the bottom of the page to see if the 'parameter' in the Info box is shown.  If it is missing, then it needs to be removed from the profile template
I just corrected a 896 Unknown Parameter 1 suggestion and the problem was that there was a missing equal sign between the parameter name and the parameter value (it wasn't the 1st parameter in the template)

No problem. Lots of people don't realize the answer or at least a big clue is in the Info box. Glad i could help.

896 Unknown parameter in template Help Grabow-89

using Unknown parameter: country
{{Roll of Honor

Johannes Rudolf Grabow 18 Dec 1892 Wutzetz, Ruppin, Brandenburg, Deutschland 24 Mar 1918 Neustadt an der Dosse, Ruppin, Brandenburg, Deutschland Male image Lewerenz-9

I have the same problem with 10 profiles (all wounded or killed in action or prisoner of war). As I understand is the unknown parameter the country. In all cases I wrote Germany, so I don't know where the mistake is?????

by Dieter Lewerenz G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)

I had a couple of these appear too. Looking at the current specification for the Roll of Honor template on https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Roll_of_Honor, it looks like country is no longer one of the recognised parameters. I think it must have been at some point in the past, as I'm sure I would have just copied it from somewhere. However since it seems country is no longer used, I have now removed it from the profiles I manage.

Yes.  That is what it looks like.

Sorry. I had to step away for a while.
I don’t understand. All of my Roll of Honor profiles are on the suggestion list. Does that mean none of the countries are correct anymore?

I checked the history of Roll of honor template https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Roll_of_Honor and country parameter was removed in March 2017, but it wasn't removed from instructions. Now we know the parameter is not needed and should be removed. It was used as part of calculated category name.

Thanks, Ales.  So, in order to resolve this error on my suggestion list, I need to remove the country name?

All the best,

Janet
Thanks, so I can remove country to solve the problem.

Well, what about this one?

Spivey-1038

using Unknown parameter: caption
{{The Great War|branch=United States Arm...

I removed The Great War and it's all messed up, now.  How do I resolve this suggestion?

Thanks so much!  I really do appreciate you for helping me better understand how to correct my profiles.

Janet

When you get a Suggestion about a template, you should check the Template page, Great War World War I

The parameter caption is not shown as a parameter at the bottom of the page.  The info box say 'unknown parameter' Caption. so that is the parameter that is causing the problem.

Thanks Linda, et all.  I appreciate you; however, this does not tell me how to resolve the issue.  I looked at the page and must I be incredibly dense. Thank you for being patient with me.

I originally copied and pasted the template from the page, so it should be correct.  I tried removing the Caption and obviously that didn't work.  I tried adding a space.  I just don't know how to fix this, so I added a comment on all of my suggestion list that I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks again, for the help guys and gals!

Maybe EditBot will fix it for me. : )

Best,

Janet

Janet, once you removed the caption parameter, and saved the profile, did you mark the error/suggestion as corrected?  If not, it will stay as an error.  If you did, it will stay until the next time Aleš runs the update.

When I removed the caption and saved, the sticker was removed from the profile and the remaining code displayed. So, removing the caption is not the answer. I’m ready to cry, “Uncle.”

You didn't remove the caption. You removed the template name. Linda corrected the page as it should be. She added template name back, since it was correct and removed the caption parameter (|caption=United States of America). Caption is a name of the incorrect parameter, not the name of the template.

How to Correct 896 Unknown Parameter in Template . . . in layman's terms.

With the help of Linda and Ales, I was able to correct all of my profiles with this error.  I really had a hard time understanding it, but the answer is very simple. Here is an explanation of how to correct this error.

 I had the "parameters" of "country" or "caption" causing problems.

{{World War II|branch=United States Army|startdate=1943|units=Army|enddate=1946|unit=|image=Photos-188.gif

+

{{World War II|branch=United States Army|startdate=1943|units=Army|enddate=1946|unit=|image=Photos-188.gif}}

|caption=United States of America}}

{{World War II|branch=United States Army|startdate=1943
|units=Army|enddate=1946|unit=|image=Photos-188.gif}}

 Hope this is helpful.

All the best,

Janet

Hi there

It has been 20 years since I developed databases and the I am sure the world has moved on however. 20 years ago and the information I still see today needs that you align your information to the database that information is going.

So before you delete anything - confirm what is needed?

A few potential problems: -

The data is in the wrong format - number rather than text (or via versu).

Spaces and blanks create problems as well.

Your information is to large (number of characters) for the field the information is going into.

I suggest you confirm the data requirements by column, adjust yours (excel is good for this). Then resubmit it.
