Changing FindAGrave Citations

This is not a discussion about whether or not to included FindAGrave citations....

When a profile includes a FindAGrave citation, please do not remove the full citation provided by FindAGrave. This citation conforms with the style recommended in Evidence Explained, which is the style recommended for WikiTree. It is good to add the external link template, if the citation does not already include it, to provide a link to the memorial that is protected from external link changes.

Also, do not move a FindAGrave citation from an inline < ref to a bulleted item under sources.

However, do remove the bare url and colon and replace "Find A Grave Memorial no. " with {{FindAGrave| memorial number here}} .

Aaron,

Yes. This gives you a citation in the format:

Find A Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com : accessed 11 July 2018), memorial page for Guy Whiting Sands (30 Dec 1872–2 Aug 1925), {{FindAGrave|66319877}}, citing Maple Grove Cemetery, Jordan, Onondaga County, New York, USA ; Maintained by KSands (contributor 49289325) .

The above works as long as you do not have multiple memorial citations. The optional sameas parameter can be used, in the form {{FindAGrave|1234|sameas=yes}} or {{FindAGrave|5678|sameas=no}}

Find A Grave, database and images (accessed 11 July 2018), memorial page for Guy Whiting Sands (30 Dec 1872–2 Aug 1925), {{FindAGrave|66319877}}, citing Maple Grove Cemetery, Jordan, Onondaga County, New York, USA ; Maintained by KSands (contributor 49289325) .

is my preferred format, since it otherwise trips the suggestion 571 FindAGrave - Link without Grave ID

You're correct. This is an older profile.... I do now removed the base FindAGrave URL

I completely agree with Aaron's comment:

"However, do remove the bare url and colon and replace "Find A Grave Memorial no. " with {{FindAGrave| memorial number here}} ."

I don't know why more detailed FindAGrave citations are being replaced by citations that only include the memorial number.  My preference is to have citations that contain facts from the entry.  The format that Aaron suggests is far more useful than a citation that only contains a number:

Find A Grave, database and images (accessed 11 July 2018), memorial page for Guy Whiting Sands (30 Dec 1872–2 Aug 1925), {{FindAGrave|66319877}}, citing Maple Grove Cemetery, Jordan, Onondaga County, New York, USA ; Maintained by KSands (contributor 49289325) .

Is there is a particular reason why FindAGrave citations are being changed to one line entries containing just the site memorial numbers?  I do not see this as a positive change.

Great advice Kay.

For those of you that have never heard of Auto Text Expander 2, check it out.  It is a browser plugin that allows you to put in shortcuts and expanded text.  When you type the shortcut, the expanded text pops up.

For example, when I type in (all caps): PENN my text is immediately replaced with: William Penn and Early Pennsylvania Settlers Project

When I type in "fff" it is replaced with: {{FindAGrave|1234567}}

So just copy the full citation and right next to the memorial # in the citation I type "fff" the template appears and then I cut the citation # and paste it over 1234567.

It is very convenient.  Check it out if you have a chance.

Thank you! This two-fingered typist had long hoped something like that was available.

Thoughts on changing sources that reference FindAGrave to regular FindAGrave?  such as when the source listed is Ancestry or Familysearch pointing to findagrave.

My thought is to leave the source that is the index and add the direct source citation to FindAGrave.

On the other hand, if it is a profile that you manage or is an orphan, I would probably only leave the index source when it points to a merged or removed memorial.
If you leave a Find a Grave link to a removed or merged Grave page, you may get a suggestion because of that.  I have worked on a lot of suggestions for both conditions and I remove the Find a Grave that is causing the problem.  Sometimes the new page is already in the profile, but not all the time.
