Unless he is mentioned in the newspapers before 1956, There is not much else in the way of information available - at least for now. .
NZ has some very strict rules about when information becomes available.

Since Mr McGhie died before his 80th birthday, his death record would not have been immediately available. It only became public in 2012 after the 80th anniversary of his birth passed.
