Get on line. For information at the military records center in St. Louis Mo. get the form , may do it by phone?  If you know the unit. They will send you a copy of his service records. Also contact the state war memorial in Indianapolis or state archives will help. His records will have the information.  My wife great grandfather was 68th. Indiana vol infantry. We got all the records, he enlisted thru Brookville he was from Trimble co Kentucky.   We also got my wife’s fathers records from WWll. If it before. 1947 that can release them.
