Scottish family lines

Good morning

My name is Stephen Thornton

My grandad allways said that we had Scottish family lines and we could wear a tarton so  a Thornton male married a female purvis.her father's line of purvis are very interesting and a sir William purvis married a Katherine Gordon in the 1500s and Katherine's father's line the Gordon's is also interesting

In the late 1400s James Gordon married a lady Marjorie Ogilvy and before returning to the Gordon tree then marrying into the Stewart line.

I would love to be allowed to wear a tarton if it be  Gordon clan or Stewart clan

any ideas who might be able to help with this

Thanks

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your message here and via the Clan Gordon's page. As a simple answer, certainly - you can wear a Gordon or Stewart tartan! The Scots are quite happy to have anyone wear almost any tartan they'd like, for whatever reason they like. Scot clans has a good explanation:

ScotClans - What tartan can I wear?

As for your pre-1500 ancestors, you may find if you dig deeply enough that most people who were born pre-1700 are already profiled on WT. For example, I believe this is the profile you're describing for the 2nd Earl of Huntly:

George Gordon 2nd Earl of Huntly

and his daughter:

Agnes Gordon

and her husband:

James Ogilvy

Hope this helps!
